WTF (from his end). I mean that's a steal to get him on staff.
If the rumors are true Matta failed IU's physical to be the HC, likely he needs a lesser right now but wants some coaching. Having this type role gets him back in the coaching circles and if his health improves he'll be ready for the next opening.
Don't forget Indiana has won 5 National Championships. With that pedigree they should be able to hire those type of coaches (especially Drew who I believe is from Indiana).
This does seem to be an uninspiring hire. Looks like hurt is going to keep happening over there. Somewhere Bobby Knight has to still be smiling.
Let me get this straight, there's an AD, then an AD for each sport, then an associate under said AD for each sport?
Interesting that Matta is taking an Assistant AD role vs. Assistant to Head Coach? Probably more money and maybe IU is positioning Matta like a professional team GM.
Since Woodson has never coached in college, this seems to be a homerun hire in that Matta can help Woodson in hiring assistant coaches and deal some of the media responsibilities.
I would be curious in an AD role, does he have even less approved player contact than if he was hired in a Hobbs or Lutz type role?
Their last championship is coming up on 35 years ago and their last FF was almost 20 years ago. Most of their success can be attributed to one coach.
He is a former IU All-American so I would think people will warm up to him initially and give him the benefit of the doubt. The NBA is all about players, so I don't get too alarmed that he was fired by the Knicks or Hawks. Can't think of any coaches who have been successful at either place in 20 years.

Indiana #5 all time. Nothing to laugh at.
It is a great basketball school. Their tradition and fan support is right up there with KU. The one advantage for IU is the state of Indiana produces quite of few great HS basketball players.
The right coach can have IU be a Mich State type program. Elite team with a lot of home-grown players.

Actually I think Penn State in wrestling is a better comparison and we saw what happened there when they got the right coach..
With this spring's roster turnover it could be a couple year process if all those guys transfer out. I would think Woodson might be able to keep some kids. Will be curious who he brings in as assistants. If I were him, would reach out to Dane Fife who is a Michigan State assistant.
Purdue has a solid program, but IMO with the right coach IU can be a top 10 program. I went to IU for grad school, so I am a bit biased.

Does make me feel good about our hire. If IU struggles like this finding a quality coach, we should feel very good about who we got..
This is an awful and embarrassing hire. Like ISU hiring Hornacek this last time. IU will continue to be IU of recent memory. Tragic really.
Not sure that really exists. Most great coaches are satisfied where they are. I can't think of any coach who would have been a "line-up to take" for IU.
- There was a lot of media reports about Stevens- but obviously he is committed to Boston this spring.
- Sounds like they wanted to hire Matta, but he failed the physical. At least Matta is going to be Associate AD of Basketball- so at least he is a resource.
- Holtzman would have bee a solid hire, but obviously he has OSU in a good place. And OSU has more $ resources than IU.
