2021 Breakout Player

I wonder if Scates just has the talent, and looks great in practice… but for one reason or another it hasn’t happened in games yet? Whether it’s just how the flow of the game is going/play calling. Or when he does get the ball thrown at jik
It’s bad luck as in maybe a bad pass or great coverage?

Hard to say, it wouldn’t shock me at all if he’s a late bloomer. But we are pretty stacked especially after figuring in TE’s and RB.

The answer to this question usually is tied to who gets injured. Last year it was downing injured and Simmons really stepping up big. Other candidate from last year would be foster, and? I can't think of anyone else last year that really surprised me.

If not due to injury, the obvious choice would be Noel or Jackson. But I'd also throw in Andrew Mevis. A kicker has the chance to add a lot to the 2020 season.

We were 94th in FBS with only 10 touch backs last year, and 80th in avg kickoff return yards. Having a kicker that can push the ball through the endzone would be huge. That's on top of having a guy with more range and accuracy on FGs.

Candidates?

RB: Jirehl Brock
WR: Joe Scates, Daniel Jackson, Jaylin Noel, Darien Porter, Aidan Bitter, Ezeriah Anderson
*The WR corps should be totally transformed from an injury-wracked ‘20.
TE: Easton Dean
OL: Grant Treiber
*Yep, I’m saying that Sean Foster will have a fight on his hands.
DE: Cordarrius Bailey, Corey Suttle, Blake Peterson. Don’t rule out Enyi or Zach Petersen having a transformational year as a pass rusher, either.
DT: JR Singleton, Howard Brown (in that order)
LB: As with QB, too many veterans for a “breakout”. Wait for ‘22.
CB: T.J. Tampa, Michal Antoine
Star/Safety: Craig McDonald…if he finds wiggle room. Loads of young talent in the safety room for Coach Broomfield.
K Andrew Mevis
P Corey Dunn (expect him to have a huge year)
KR: Darien Porter, Jirehl Brock, Eli Sanders, Deon Silas, Myles Purchase, etc are all possibilities, so whoever wins the competition.

Of course, all this aside from someone doing a good Mike Rose impression, and unexpectedly turning heads as a newcomer.

I would say Jake Remsberg was a big surprise last year too. Plus I don’t think anyone thought Isheem Young would be freshman of the year good at this time last year.

Scates certainly has all the physical tools to be a standout. I can't remember if it was Scates or Shaw or both that kept forgetting to step off the line when the TE shifted up to the line. It seemed like it happened 5-6 times last year. I know at least one TD was called back because of it. That is the kind of stuff that will keep you off the field.

Jason Scales still has eligibility left?

Not demanding it - he has already given Iowa State one hell of a lot. Just hoping for it!
No. I totally agree. I’m just thinking if he plays at a first round level, the ceiling for us as a team is unmentionably high…..

I'm hoping it is one Brock Purdy. He is already great, but I would love to see him step into first-round draft status.

If we were to win the Big 12 and make the playoffs that needs to happen. Brock needs to take care of the ball and lean on his weapons and elite offensive line. We can't have one of those turnover riddled games and lose to an inferior opponent because of it. That being said, he is the best to ever do it at Iowa State. I agree there is another gear there he could hit though.
