2018 Cap City League

Who does that? I’d be curious if you could name more than 5 players that redshirted last year without looking it up. (Obviously not transfer or medical.)

It’s smart to save your redshirt for a transfer.

There is no one size fits all answer here. For skinny guys who need to develop physically and are sitting behind depth that won't allow them to play, redshirting may be a better option.

I don't think we should plan their careers around the possibility of a transfer anyway.

Unless we deal with some injuries this season itd be in Haliburtons best interest to RS and add 15-25 pounds of muscle to his frame. His potential is through the roof with that length. Same could be said for Coditt. If they can make a significant impact this year however you play them.

15-25lbs? Do you realize how much weight that is for a kid of his body type to just pack on in a single year? If he could put on 10lbs of good weight in a year I would be ecstatic. Beyond that, if his skills, effort, execution are up to standard, then he is completely capable of playing this year regardless of what his weight is.

As a skinny dude with a high metabolism, I can honestly say that this would be impossible for me. In my 20's when I was really active and working out, I could maintain 175 (my normal weight if somewhat active and eating normal things is around 170). Even in my 40's, I had to eat a ton and not move very much to get up to 185.

While I agree with you that redshirting a freshman should almost never happen at Iowa State, I don't think that's a fair question. You don't know about a freshman redshirting until they are juniors or seniors. There are certain schools that use redshirts successfully. I believe West Virginia uses them occasionally, for example Lamont West. Wisconsin will also do it in some situations, like Ethan Happ. The systems they play may have some part in their decisions.

i'm a halliburton fan. love this kid.

here's a scary scenario: babb isn't healthy, LW still a turnover machine, and we're left with Talley as our PG. We'd need halliburton if that plays out...

I thought I read/heard speculation that they hoped Lewis could develop into a lead guard?

Point guard has me concerned, I think we're sitting fine everywhere else.

I’m a big Haliburton fan too but I think in that scenario, we’d probably go big and move THT to the 1, Wigginton 2, Shayok 3 and then go with two bigs.

So...you’re ignoring all of the teams that redshirt basketball players?

Redshirting basketball players is really an antiquated idea. All you are doing is forcing anyone who can make some money playing Ball either in the NBA or overseas, an extra year of an internship with little pay. That is a big deal when you are only going to get 10-15 years for this career.

I don't think Haliburton or Conditt will red shirt this year, unless they decide that would be best for them. Minutes for both likely will be limited this year unless the unexpected happens, still I think they could get a handfull of minutes for experience and get use to travel in the Big 12 for the future. It is easy for fans to project on other they should sit out it is much more difficult for a player to plan on staying an extra year.

Before we say Haliburton needs to gain weight (especially monumental amount like 15-25 lbs over a summer?1?) remember Monte was much smaller and was expected to RS by CFH going into his freshman year, but ended up changing the staffs mind and starting effectively by mid year. I'd rather just leave it up to the individual and coaches decide red shirting is the best option during the fall rather than us poster speculating on the players career path off viewing a couple CCL games.

Conditt is a lot more skilled than I expected. He could become a great one if he can add weight and eventually handle himself in the paint against bigs.

I don’t think Halliburton is going to be ready to play this year. Monte played his freshman year because he could sit in the corner and make threes while Kane dominated the ball. I’m not sure Haliburton can even get a shot off much with that release and his ball handling won’t be as good as other guys on the team. I think he’s got amazing potential though.

I’m not sure how much he’ll play this year but nothing would surprise me. His ball handling is actually very good and even though he has an interesting shot, he’s almost 6-6. That size will help him get shots off. Quick release too.

20 pounds over a course of a 15 month period (RS year) is not ridiculous whatsoever. For a 6'6" kid as long as him you'd barely even notice the added weight. To say that is some absurd goal is just wrong. Solomon Young was an absolute brickhouse as a freshman and pretty sure he put on another 10-15 pounds before his soph season.

Oh and George Conditt is going to be an absolute freak. If Lard sticks around for a few more years our frontcourt is going to be special.

FWIW, Haliburton's shot is pretty quick for how unique it is.

Tyrese Haliburton highlights

Talen Horton-Tucker highlights

George Conditt highlights

And lastly, Michael Jacobson highlights

3 things
1. Those were pretty impressive highlights by all even if it is the capital city league.

2. We are loaded with talent/potential from top to bottom.

3. It’s going to be hard to keep tucker out of the starting lineup. Very excited to watch this team.

I don't care to speculate on what's best for whom, but I've never understood the redshirt logic. If you're going to get end of bench minutes as a freshman, it's logical to embrace the redshirt. 1. It can be burned later, 2. Eligibility burns the same no matter when you take the redshirt. 3. If you don't transfer, you end up with a max of three productive years, instead of four.

And if you're not at the end of the bench, then you're playing a role and obviously wouldn't.

When's the last time anyone on the team red-shirted when it wasn't due to injury or transfer rules? You just don't red-shirt in basketball unless it's for extraordinary reasons. You can probably come up with one player in the last 10 years who did red-shirt without injury or transferring, but that's the point. It's very rare. And now people are talking about red-shirting not one, but two players. I don't think so.

You don't red-shirt in basketball because of the limited scholarship spots for one thing. If he's not good enough to play right away, why eat up the scholarship for another year when you could get someone in there who is good enough to play in his first year? And if you DO red-shirt him, chances are he'll transfer anyway and then you've bulked him up in the weight room for someone else's benefit.
