It's certainly not as fun without the US in the tournament, but there will still be some quality matches. Russia vs. New Zealand kicks off the tournament and is on FS1 right now.

Don't follow soccer a lot why is the U.S. not in this tourney? Is it a did not qualify or chose not to participate thing?

Didn't qualify. Lost to Mexico in the playoff match after splitting the Gold Cups the last cycle. Winner of the Gold Cup each year earns a spot in the playoff, and if a team wins both Gold Cups in a cycle they qualify directly.
It's disappointing, but not the end of the world. It's good development for fringe players and a chance for the host country to prepare and hype the next year's World Cup.

As mentioned earlier, the US didn't qualify. There's only 8 teams in this tournament: the previous World Cup winner, the host country, and then the 6 qualifiers from the different world regions.

Chile just had a goal overturned by video replay for offside. It really looks like it wasn't offside. Woof. What's the point of video replay if you're still going to get it wrong?

Edit: Dr. joe saying that it was the right call on halftime replays. It was really, really tight if it was indeed offside.

I thought we had a loss to Jamaica that cost us qualifying?

Agreed its annoying we aren't in this, but something about international/country vs country soccer that is more fun/easier to follow for me than who's on what team and in what league.

CONCACAF now has the two previous Gold Cup winners play a match and the winner gets to go to the Confederations Cup. We won the Gold Cup in 2013 and Mexico in 2015, we lost to Mexico in the 1 match play-off so they got to go to the Confederations Cup.

People tend to look at a player's feet to determine offsides but a player can be offside if his head, torso or legs are closer to the goal line than the second defender. Only hands and arms are exempted. The replay I saw looked like his upper body was clearly offside.

I know this has nothing to do with this play, but the keeper can at times be the second defender so a forward pass behind a beaten keeper with a lone position player in goal is offsides. People often miss this nuance of the rule as well.

Not much went right for Mexico today against Germany, but Marco Fabian's goal is worth taking a peek at if you haven't seen it.

I missed seeing it live. I turned it off around the 85th minute after watching Germany dominate the whole match.

I couldn't find the highlight, but Werner had a great left-footed touch and went around his defender on the right towards the end of the match.
