Both of his parent's have cancer, so I guess I struggle to be too hard on him or his parents.
I'm sorry that anyone has to go through cancer (a close friend is in a major battle with it right now); but I don't understand how that is relevant to the race or the way they acted (and reacted).
It very well may not be. I guess I have a little trouble piling on a guy who is going through that, that's all.

Serious question: would you be defending him this hard if his parents did NOT have cancer, or if you were unaware of that fact?
To keep the issues separate:
1) I really don't care if someone talks **** to Michael Phelps. It's sports. It's meant to be fun, and I can appreciate a little back-and-forth. Again, it's not like the guy is a criminal or something. Does it make it a little more fun when Phelps wins against a guy who more-or-less called him out? Sure. But I guess I just can't get too fired up over a good ol' fashioned swimming beef.
So if Lily King would have lost to that Russian chick the other night, would we be up in arms about her talking **** and losing?
2) The cancer thing is wholly separate from his comments about Phelps. To me, it's just harder to root against a guy whose parents both have cancer. No pedestal, nothing like that. I just imagine with your parents having cancer you put a little more pressure on yourself to succeed, and it'd be a big disappointment not to even medal.

2) Yes, the cancer thing is wholly separate. The only reason to bring it up is to gain sympathy for an athlete and/or his parents. As such, it is immaterial to the conversation, and the manner in which you introduced it to the topic was calculated to imply "you shouldn't pick on someone whose parents have cancer. I don't, therefore I am better than you heathens".

On the tape delay issue, nearly anything I care about I have watched online. Stick the laptop in the kitchen and watch while I make salsa with all of these tomatoes.
I saw a review of the opening ceremonies (I never watch those) that said the ceremonies themselves were great but NBC was epic fail. We were apparently the only country with a multiple hour delay so NBS could add "context," which the article interpreted as multiple NBC efforts at hyping women's gymnastics.

That, and the two women gossiping about athletes and talking about wine. I would have paid money to see them removed from the equation.

WTH, that's hilarious! I also watch Wimbledon online, a trick I learned from one of the kids. Something along the lines of, "Mom, quit yelling at the TV, you can watch any match you want on the Wimbledon site. And you don't have to curse at John McEnroe and Chris Evert."
