2016 Rio Summer Olympics

Almost worth just accepting and moving on. The Bob Costas diatribe we are likely guaranteed to get later on will put us all to sleep.
Why do we have Olympics? Is it an international Economy booster-type thing or is it an attempt to try to promote peace between the nations? I'm fascinated by the concept but I never follow it.
Modern Olympics yes. It (re)started as athletic competition and the peace/unity aspect grew from there. It only boosts the pockets of the IOC but it's less corrupt than fifa. I love the Olympics. Love it and am glued to my TV for 2 weeks when normally I wouldn't care about track/field and swimming.
I dig the map, too ... although it's another reminder of how weak I am at world geography.
less corrupt than FIFA by like 2% give or take. Need to confirm whether or not Rio facilities were built by slaves. Until then, FIFA FTW.

fun fact, I'm pretty sure that be where Pirates of the Caribbean was filmed. Think that's why I know where it is.
I'm not big into pageantry and stuff, but I like to watch the opening ceremony and especially the Parade of Nations.
I had to make sure nobody slipped any acid in my beer when I saw that.
On a side note, the Tonga flag carrier should have done a body slide into the stadium with as much astro-glide as he had on.
