2016 lineup

now the it is official Goose and Spoon are going 165 and 174, my guess:

125: Boston/Larson
133: Hall (Olympic RS still possible?)
141: Dante/Meeks (Olympic or normal RS for Dante?)
149: Gabe
157: RRS/Briceno/Brietenbach
165: Goose
174: Spoon
184: Pestano/? (Pestano has been doing freestyle at 189 this summer)
197: Harrington
HWT: Smith

The biggest questions for me are 157 and 184

I looked up the 2016 Olympic Redshirt criteria (.pdf). A wrestler has to meet one of these four criteria to be eligible.

  • Past National Team members (Top 3 from the World or
    Olympic Team Trials)
  • Top 8 at the 2015 Senior World Team Trials
  • Top 3 at the 2015 NCAA Wrestling Championship or NCAA
Champion from a previous year AND top 2 from the 2015
University National Championships (must accomplish both)
  • Previous Junior or University World Medalist
Freestyle World Team Trials are June 12-14 in Madison, Wisc. Hall has to place in the top 8 to have redshirting as an option.

Edit: I actually don't think Hall is even eligible to compete at the World Team Trials now that I look at the criteria.
Wrestlers who meet the following criteria will qualify for the World Team Trials:
1. Top 5 placers per weight class from 2015 U.S. Freestyle Open Championships
2. Champion of the Freestyle 2015 Northern Plains Regional (Senior)
3. Champion of the Freestyle 2015 Northeast Regional (Senior)
4. Up to one wildcard per weight may be selected by the National Freestyle Head Coach with approval of the Freestyle Sport Wildcard Subcommittee. See the wildcard selection procedure below.

None of our guys are eligible for a Olympic redshirt. Powell or Pestano would be my guess at 184.

KJ wants John Meeks to go to 133 and then redshirt Earl. Not sure John wants or can cut to 133 and be effective.

Then the following year, Dante would redshirt and Earl would be 133, Meeks at 141, Gabe at 149.

Sounds like RRS is leader at 157. Briceno might start at 149 until Gabe is healthy. (This is for next year)

I see 184 potentially being our biggest hole to fill. What are the chances of Patrick Downey signing and wrestling 184? Is he looking to sign with someone this summer? When is Gabe projected to be back in the line-up.

I'm excited to see the big freshman class wrestle. You'd think there will be a Leland or Dante among all of those state champs (unforseen surprise).

I still think Downey and Pixley are trying to decide. I think Iowa State is in play for both, but only want one of them

I've heard that Downey wants to come here, not sure if it will happen or not yet. My feeling is that there is a good chance it will.

He would come in and be one of the best wrestlers on our team, if not the best. His wrestling skills are off the charts. Was a junior world silver medalist in freestyle.

He carries some baggage, though, and I'm sure that's being taken into consideration.

125- Boston or Larson
133- Hall
141- Meeks (Dante redshirt to build up to 149)
149- Briceno, then Gabe when he's healthy
157- RRS
165- Weatherman
174- Spoon
184- Downey
197- Harrington
HWT- Smith

Not a terrible lineup at all.
133, 149 (if Gabe is healthy), 165, 174, 184 will all contend for AA
125, 197 have a good chance to qualify and win a couple of matches
141 depends. I've heard that he wrestles like a top AA when his head is on straight in practice. If he can wrestle in competition like practice, look out. However, since he has yet to do that, I am not getting my hopes up. (If Dante doesn't redshirt then I think he has a ceiling of R12)
157 and HWT are unlikely to qualify, however Smith could keep improving and surprise me. RRS is wrestling real well this off season, but I'd like to see what he can do in November and December before I put him in the qualifier range.

Downey fills a huge hole for us at 184, that's awesome news. What does everyone here expect from him? Obviously a little tough to tell since he hasn't competed at the D-1 level, but I know next to nothing about him so I'd like to hear what you guys think.

He will do the job at 184 quite well for us right out of the blocks. Very experienced and beat some quality D1 guys at the University Nationals in Freestyle..One of them was Slammin' Sammy Brooks.

I think 3 years of eligibility, but may not be here until 2nd semester. Not sure if that is true.

That's not a bad lineup at all. Especially for duals.
