2005 vs 2009 talent

I think the overall WR depth is greater in 09 vs. 05.

Beyond the top 3 and Sumrall in 05', the position wasn't very deep if I recall.

Neither Brant nor Zehr went to the NFL from what I recall. I actually ran into Brant while he was a doorman at Cy's and he said was still trying for workouts. Hopefully things worked out for him.

IMO. 2009 offense slightly better.
2005 defense vastly better.

As good as the 05 defense was (and they were very good at creating turnovers, scoring, and giving the offense a short field), I will sadly remember that unit the most for the games that were lost in the closing minutes. We stuttered in OT against Nebraska, and gave up game-tying drives in the final minutes of regulation to back-up quarterbacks against Missouri and Kansas. We also let Baylor push us around on our own field.

Don't get me wrong, I loved watching that D play, but the team in 05 could have been truly exceptional. Had even one of our four ugly regular season losses gone differently, we would have been Big 12 North champs. I still cannot believe how agonizingly close we came two years in a row.

As good as that D was, it had no DEPTH. Curvey and Leaders had to play almost every down and by the end of games, they were worn down. Honestly, I can't remember any backups that played on that D other than the rotation at DE and SAM and Singleton playing some CB. When you lose that many close games, there's a reason. Add about three decent backups to that D and ISU wins a couple of those close games and Mac is still coaching at ISU.

Absolutely. Also think of this, Shaggy was alright in 2005, except for a couple of game losing field goals, but he wasn't that good in 2004. So if I had the option of Shaggy entering the 2005 season or Mahoney entering this season, I would have to take Mahoney. Mahoney had a much better first year.

Culbertson was 8-10 as a walk-on freshman (2004), all inside 40 yards, after not attempting any kicks until the 8th game of the season.

Mahoney was 12-16 inside 40 yards as a scholarship frosh.
