2/11-12 Winter Weather Thread

I have always used my 4 with a plow because my house had a long drive. Bought a different house a year ago and cant use it because there isnt enough room. So I had to shovel this year until about then 3rd snow and I came across am older Snapper single stage for 80 bucks. Thing fires up first pull. So far that's been the best 80 bucks I've spent so far this year.
Well...my driveway was about as bad as I expected it to be when I got home from work tonight. 4 foot drifts in spots. 2 hours later. Good times.

This looks very familiar to me. Mine is on about a 45 degree upslope though.
EDIT: I was going to add a “like” to this, but then thought, “no...this probably deserves a ‘Dislike’”, but then thought that would be a disservice to you. This winter is so damn confusing.
I have a slight up-slope too of maybe 10-15 degrees. the real issue is the open corn field on the west side of the house. luckily the neighbor has a 3/4ton truck with a plow on the front and has been helping to keep our off shoot of the street clear and clearing out my driveway for me. A snow fence has been tried before with no success.
I've lucked out the last four times I had to clear my driveway...the plow arrived while I was clearing it each time.
Now I probably just screwed myself for the next big snowfall.
We are on top of a hill. Approximately a flat acre behind/west of our house, which then drops off significantly. Our front/east yard is all uphill from the road to the house. The
Prevailing NW wind just wreaks havoc on the driveway. A snow fence would have no impact for us either.
All we can do is try to stay on top of it until all the snow on the northern part of our property all blows away.
Northeast Iowa is a disaster right now. 4-6’ drifts across many gravel roads making travel nearly impossible.
I think Black Hawk, Clayton, and Delaware counties have all pulled plows off the road. Saw Hwy 13 north of Manchester had a semi jack knifed on it earlier this afternoon. and Hwy 38 had drifts forming on it around 4pm.
Recently, I saw something pretty cool related to snow removal in Ames. We live on a cul-de-sac with a curbed area in the middle. I was working at home and had a view out to the street. When the snow plow comes through, it pushes snow up the street and into the middle of the cul-de-sac. However, before pushing a new batch of snow onto the pile, he got out and looked at the existing pile. Local kids had been digging tunnels and having fun with the pile for a few days prior. Apparently, he made sure that there were no kids still there before he pushed another big bunch of snow onto the pile. We have a bunch of homeschool kids on the street so it is conceivable that they would be playing in their snow fort even during normal school hours. Kudos to the Ames snow plow driver who made the extra effort to be protect our kids.
Benton and Tama counties are pretty much closed right now. Everything is drifted closed. Same with far SW CR and Fairfax. Plows have been pulled off the road in those areas.
We got ****** hard over here around CR and to the North. Roads this morning were as bad as I can remember.
