In Memoriam: Ames Business/Restaurants

i think Casey’s will be fine. People like their pizza, especially the breakfast pizza. Kwik Star is larger and has more offerings, plus their fried chicken is pretty good. I like both. Other stores might continue to get squeezed with Kwik Star coming in would be my guess. Haven’t been in a Maverick yet.

I will say I think Kwik Star pays better and has better service. Although some Casey’s have good service, just not as consistent maybe.
Kwik Star Fried Chicken is elite.

Agree with KwikStar kicking Casey's, but how in the world does their stock price keep climbing so much? Wish I would have bought Casey's stock a decade or so ago(not looked up just assuming)
Brother in law works there. They track EVERYTHING down to the decimal point. And in doing so it correlates to profit. To put it into perspective, they can tell if a single donut is unaccounted for.

We did that to my roommate all the time.

We'd follow him around on deliveries and when he'd walk up to the door, we'd run up to his car, hop in and take it and park it on the next street.

One time we did something different to another friend who delivered for Dominos. Instead of moving his car, I laid in his backseat covered by the big pizza bag. He got in the car, started to drive away, I slowly sat up, positioned the camera and said "Hey Garret".

He turned around and I snapped a picture. The picture should have won a prize because it was absolute terror on his face.

I really wish I knew what happened to that picture.

Then our other friends rolled up laughing so hard. They were like "we saw his car start driving, the brake lights come on then the camera flash"

Man I miss college.

Well that makes me feel better after I told the check out person I accidentally dropped a donut on the floor and threw it in the garbage. They did thank me for letting them know.

Different then the one I was remembering - I was gone by 2000

Caseys will be fine, their strength is in small towns that brands like QuiK Star will never move into because of lack of traffic flow. Lots of those smaller town stores are complete dumps, but it's one of the few places that you can get gas, hot food and beer without driving 15 to 20 minutes. They are also still expanding into other states, pushing hard into Texas A1 says nearly 200 stores and 150 in Oklahoma. The DMR stated their goals was 2000 stores across Texas.

If you google Valentino’s Sicilian sauce, you’ll find a knock off recipe to make at home that’s pretty good.
A few years ago one of the posters on this board gave me the recipe (he used to cook there), and I've made it several times. Despite having their recipe, somehow mine is never quite as good. :D

I can only imagine the commentary in this thread when a Buc-ees gets built in the area.
A Buc-ee's in the Des Moines area would be a total game changer. Hopefully they will be looking to move into Iowa in 28/29 time frame. They have one in Springfield MO, and building one on the Kansas side of KC by the race track and where the Chiefs new stadium will be. They just announced last week they are opening their first in N. Carolina.

Currently they only have 56 stores across 20 states but have announced another 15 to be built.
