Audi Crooks to Transfer

Yep I agree with Brent Blum: “losing Audi Crooks was a gut punch of all gut punches.”
In this day and age losing her isn’t a gut punch. It’s financial and commitment reality. No different than losing Milan. Do I like it? Nope. But that’s the current status of college athletics where money is everything.

So we have Dan Gable, Carl Sanderson, Marcus Fizer, Troy Davis and Audi Crooks.

Pretty good list of you ask me.

Danny Harris in the 400 hurdles. Won the silver medal and was the only guy to beat Edwin Moses in like 15 years. I believe he was still at ISU or had just graduated.
ISU was at the center of the 400 meter hurdles universe during the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics, as ISU Freshman Danny Harris got silver in the Men's race and Nawal El Moutawakel won GOLD in the women's. ISU had excellent T&F / XC teams when I was a student in the early to mid 1980's.

Nawal El Moutawakel
is the Moroccan Olympic gold medalist who competed for Iowa State University in the 1980s. As an ISU freshman, she won the inaugural women's 400m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Olympics with a time of 54.61 seconds, becoming the first African, Arab, and Muslim woman to win an Olympic gold medal.

Key Details About Nawal El Moutawakel:
  • Olympics: Won gold in the 400m hurdles at the 1984 Los Angeles Games.
  • Iowa State Career: Arrived in 1983/1984, winning the NCAA Outdoor Championship in the 400m hurdles in 1984, specializing in physical education.
  • Significance: She was the first Moroccan, African, and Muslim woman to win an Olympic gold medal.
  • Post-Athletics: She later served as a member of the International Olympic Committee and as Minister of Sports in Morocco.

Many more could be added due to Olympic status. Danny Harris being one that was mentioned as well as Chris Taylor and Ben Peterson. Matt Blair has been mentioned. Ron Galimore. Jack Trice. Gary Thompson is another. All are and will be remembered nationally.

I was there at that time also and into running, so I knew who they both were (actually met both). And they both had a brief period around the Olympics where they were undoubtbly bigger than Audi. 3-4 months after the Olympics, they were probably forgotten by most people who heard about them during the Olympics. Audi has maintained national attention for the entire 4-5 month season.

I think the assertion was that Audi was #1. Just Cael himself got WAY more national recognition during his undefeated run. I remember it well and everyone who didn't even know anything about wrestling was following him and what he would do in his next match.

THERE IS NO FRIGGIN WAY YOU CAN SUGGEST THAT THE MILAN LEAVING SITUATION IS THE SAME AS AUDI, FOR SO MANY REASONS, WOW!

Why not? As far as the impact on the team? Both were that critical to the success of their teams. This discussion isn’t about why they left but about the impact. If you don’t think they are similar…then WOW
