'Birth of Hilton Magic' full game

I watched on ESPN. My memories... It was a long time ago, so not claiming 100 percent accuracy.

1. There weren't that many Big 8 games on ESPN. Mostly Big East with a few Big 10. If they were it was Missouri or Kansas. Probably the only reason it was chosen to broadcast was because Mizzou was a perennial power in those days.

2. I think it was the second game of the night. Began at 9:00 Central. So got over after 11;00. Then there was SportsCenter or whatever their daily round up show was back then. Then they rebroadcast the game. I remember the lead-in to the rebroadcast, the guy said something to the effect, "You may be surprised by the outcome."

3. It was such a big step for ISU to beat a highly ranked team, I ended up staying up to watch the replay, so got to bed quite late. And then had early rise for work in the AM. But it was pretty cool to be at work because everyone knew about it either from watching on cable or the result in the morning paper. Was a fun day at work in the Quad Cities, which was 90 percent Hawk. Fortunately where I worked it was slightly better.

Found this over the weekend, 1983 ISU-Missouri game, considered de-facto "Hilton Magic" origin, full telecast, sans breaks/commercials.

Probably has been posted on CF from time to time, worth a look regardless.

Among numerous fun throw-back details:
* No shot clock or 3-point line
* Few fans are wearing Iowa State sports clothing, other than a few wearing cardinal or gold shirts. A lot of "everyday clothes."
* Ron Falenschek!
* (And, of course, the short-shorts uniform era)

Kind of wish commercials were included as looking back on them now might be interesting. :)

True. If I had to rely on memory / perceived memory, I would have guessed it was top 5, but "lore" can be misleading.

About 10 days prior, ISU beat #20 Oklahoma State. I think that was the first win over top 25 team in Orr era.
They beat Minnesota earlier in the season, I’m not sure if they were ranked or not. The Minnesota win I feel is the birth of Hilton Magic, or at least the first time the Iowa State AD realized the power of Hilton.

Based on ISU's page on Wikipedia, Minnesota was not ranked at the time of game, and didn't have a great season overall (based on other sources). But I do recall that being a huge win at the time, listened to that on radio. [The 1981-82 UM team won Big Ten regular season title.]

Also had forgotten, AP poll was only 20 teams in 1982-83, it didn't expand to 25 until '89.

They were not ranked, but I think the previous year they had won the Big 10. So it seemed like a pretty big deal.

The shot was the start. I can still see it in slow motion him rising up and hitting it then I could not hear for a few minutes. Gary did post match with Johnny on the court I don't think he heard much Gary said.

It was the Steve Stipanovich cap gun game. Can you imagine today letting 3 or 4,000 kids bring cap guns that look like hand guns without the orange tip?
I listened to all those games since there weren’t on tv. The eighties were a great time to grow up. I wonder how many shotguns were in the back windows of trucks!

They didn't try managing games to a 1/10th of a second back then. That plus not stopping the clock on made baskets eliminated a clock review after every play late in the game.

John MCPoland, sports editor of the daily, wore a spider man costume and brought a toy Tommy gun and sat behind Norm Stewart. Towards the end of the game Norm had enough and tried to beat the living crap out of McPoland. An assistant coach had to pull him off.

I worked as a student intern in the athletic department. We typed the play by play and ran it off in a ditto machine. I sat next to Norm Stewart. In the final timeout he asked me who was going to take the final shot. I smiled and said I guess we’ll find out. The typist and I were the only ones who didn’t cheer as I was reading the play by play to her. Pretty loud. And interviewed Barry afterwards and still have that on cassette. He described the play. Barry was the nicest guy I ever met.
Barry wasa very nice guy and personable

First time I have watched that.
Let's Go State!

Definitely agree on the Hilton Magic aspect of this game but the turning point for the program occurred earlier in the season when Johnny inserted walk on freshman Jeff Hornacek in the starting lineup. The positive impact of that move was immediate and profound.

Good point about Hornacek.

In that era, ISU games weren't available too frequently on The Television Set, but I tried to catch as many games as possible on radio. I remember Pete & Johnny pregame shows, part of routine was Pete asking about that game's starting lineup.

That season, it had been fairly consistent, then one day he had Hornacek in list of starters, and I wasn't expecting it. Seems like JH had played some minutes, but maybe not enough to think he was close to top 5 rotation.

Not sure which regular guy got bumped, I'd have to check specific season and the full roster.
