Found this over the weekend, 1983 ISU-Missouri game, considered de-facto "Hilton Magic" origin, full telecast, sans breaks/commercials.

Probably has been posted on CF from time to time, worth a look regardless.

Among numerous fun throw-back details:
* No shot clock or 3-point line
* Few fans are wearing Iowa State sports clothing, other than a few wearing cardinal or gold shirts. A lot of "everyday clothes."
* Ron Falenschek!
* (And, of course, the short-shorts uniform era)

SIT DOWN NORM, SIT DOWN NORM

Was there too. Didn’t have many choices in apparel back then. Just wore our regular clothes. Everybody did wear the same jacket with a block style IOWA STATE on the back. Just a matter of which color you had. Cardinal, gold or white. Was sitting in the second or third row of the baseline. Much closer than they are now. Had to wait outside and then run in when they unlocked the doors to get your seat.

That gawdawful mascot. I always used to joke that he was the only mascot that could double as a phone booth.

I worked as a student intern in the athletic department. We typed the play by play and ran it off in a ditto machine. I sat next to Norm Stewart. In the final timeout he asked me who was going to take the final shot. I smiled and said I guess we’ll find out. The typist and I were the only ones who didn’t cheer as I was reading the play by play to her. Pretty loud. And interviewed Barry afterwards and still have that on cassette. He described the play. Barry was the nicest guy I ever met.

It was mentioned on broadcast that ISU hadn’t defeated Missouri since 1978. To give even more context, these are the results between that and 2/8/83. Shows how dominant Mizzou had been during that stretch. I reverse-chrono order (Source: cyclones.com)

1982: at Missouri 100, Iowa State 71
1982: Missouri 86, at Iowa State 73
1981: at Missouri 95, Iowa State 70 (Big 8 Tournament)*
1981: Missouri 70, at Iowa State 56*
1981: at Missouri 92, Iowa State 69*
1980: Missouri 84, at Iowa State 70
1980: at Missouri 85, Iowa State 70
1979: at Missouri 73, Iowa State 67
1979: Missouri 84, at Iowa State 80 (OT)
1978: at Missouri 65, Iowa State 63

Ron Falenschek was the subject of Johnny Orr’s all time classic quote.
the question from Ron Maly (I think): Where’s Falenschek’s weight?
Johnny: “It’s in his *******”.

Missouri was the Kansas of the Big 8 during those years, they won the Big 8 regular season championship all but one year from 1979-1983. After that season, Norm won only two or three regular season championships over the next 10 years. Kansas and Oklahoma were pretty good then.

The coolest thing about reading the play by play to our typist is that it was Johnny Orr’s typewriter we used. Not sure if it was that game or another Missouri game, Johnny Orr got in a heated . discussion right in front of me with Norm. He pointed to the typewriter and told Norm that “you aren’t allowed to touch that or throw that coach. It’s the only typewriter they let me have.” I was rolling laughing. Loved working with Johnny. It was after Bobby Knight threw the chair.

Was Missouri ranked when this game was played? I know I heard the announcers say they were undefeated in conference play.
