Tamin Lipsey committed to Iowa State after going 0-19 in the Big 12. Lipsey committed shortly after TJ became the head coach and had not coached a game here. The hometown kid played through it all. He was forced into the starting lineup as a freshman when Tyrese Hunter hit the portal. He has had his ups and downs throughout his career as all college players have, but you never questioned his heart. He's played through injuries that many players would sit for. He might be the toughest player to ever come through here; he is up there with the likes of Melvin Ejim and Naz Long for hardest working players.

Thank you for everything, Tamin. No fan will ever know the injuries and pain you've played through. Your journey is not done yet, and no one deserves a deep run in March more than you do.

Anyone else notice he had some discomfort after that steal and layup at the end?

He's still playing through pain and has a couple tournaments in him yet.

I appreciate everything Tamin has given to Ames and Iowa State. He's one of the all-time greats.

He is underrated as one of ISU greatest players.
Players with 3x all-conference:
Stevens, Grayer, Azziz 4x, Fizer, Morris, Lipsey ? (assuming this year).

Only because Fred went to Nebraska. Love Lipsey but Hoiberg was great right until he said yes to Nebraska
I was OK with him going to Nebraska since he didn't leave ISU to take the job. He wanted to try his hand at the NBA, and I don't blame him for that. I think if he had known he was going to be a lifetime college coach he would have stayed in Ames. As a fellow Little Cyclone and Cyclone, I'll always appreciate everything Fred did for Ames and ISU.

Ames High Aims High!!

I posted this in Jake Brend's video montage of the game, but thought I would also post it here as a very tangible evidence of how much we should appreciate Tamin.

Tamin Plays – Arizona State – March 7, 2026
  1. Steal and behind the back pass for Heise layup on fast break. [not sure of time because my replay started with 14:27 left in half due to Butler/DePaul game]
  2. Tip out of Buchanan’s failed attempt to follow-up on Lipsey’s bad miss. [17:50 shown on replay]
  3. Reads pass, makes steal, but throws it back to ASU. Near turnover. [12:22]
  4. In perfect position to pick up ball after ASU #2 gets stopped by Heise. [1:03]
  5. Jumps in air, reaches down to knock away the pass. [Second Half: 18:20]
  6. Bounce passes it back to Toure while going out of bounds in corner. [18:20]
  7. Foul on near steal in front of ASU bench. [17:43]
  8. Picks up loose ball, takes it strong at ASU’s tall #35 for layup and foul. [17:22]
  9. Taps ball away on reach in on ASU #14, but called for foul. [15:38]
  10. Picks up ball after Jefferson knocks it loose, lobs it downcourt perfectly for Jefferson open dunk. [14:15]
  11. Batemon pokes ball loose from ASU #2, Tamin goes to ground to get it. [12:23]
  12. Draws foul on his back while tossing ball back to Batemon. [12:23] TV broadcasters make reference to “Tamin Plays.”
  13. “Pulls the chair” on ASU #1 who was leaning on him. #1 falls out of bounds. If it didn’t work, Tamin was giving him an open path to the basket. [11:41]
  14. Reach around on ASU #2 as he goes past, Batemon called for foul. [8:04]
  15. Anticipated the pass and almost got the steal on ASU #14. [6:21]
  16. Bringing ball up court, throws long downcourt pass to Milan for open three-pointer. [4:45]
  17. Dribbling, fade away from left side with 2 seconds left on shot clock. [2:52]
  18. Tip steal and easy layup while looking off his defender. [2:25]
Notes:
  • Tamin started his freshman season only because Tyrese Hunter transferred, Jeremiah Williams got injured, and AJ Green went to NBA.
  • Still making “Tamin Plays” even with only a few minutes left in a blowout game.
  • LaPhonso Ellis earlier said that he picked Jefferson as his national player-of-the-year, yet the biggest ovation [1:09] at the end of the game was for Tamin.
  • There may have been more “Tamin Plays” early in the game, but my replay began with 14:27 left in the first half.
  • Is it legit to have two “Tamin Plays” on one play? It happened twice (18:20 and 12:23 in second half).
  • Is it legit to call it a “Tamin Play” even if we don’t get the turnover? It happened three times (15:38, 8:04, 6:21).
  • It may not be a “Tamin Play” per se, but he was able to get open repeatedly in the corner on inbounds plays under pressure after ASU baskets.

How was Aziz 4x all conference when he was done playing in 1968 and the NCAA didn't allow freshmen to compete until 1972?
