ISU Ranked #21 in Preseason Coaches Poll

Popularity contest plays a role in these, along with recency effect. That said, half our schedule has opponents on that list or receiving votes, it will be a challenge to get to 10 wins again.
Why is Illinois so far ahead of us? Seems like we were very similar last year.
Probably a bit of "I'll believe it when I see it" with them.
Glad they have ASU at #11. The rest in the 20-25 range is where I think we can expect the CFB powers to put most B12 teams in these polls. We are going to have to earn our way into the Top 20. 
Same with Miami and some others. It's clear that the B12 isn't going to get the benefit of the doubt compared to the sec and big, as well as the three brands from the ACC.
Tech is going to have to prove it. Purchasing a football roster isn't exactly fool proof.
KSU, ISU, BYU, and TT looks like, “I guess we should include some big 12 teams now that we have gotten our priority programs awarded”

They should be interesting. They return a bunch, but so did Oklahoma State last year.

A 9-3 XII team bears the burden of proof to justify getting into the top 15.
A 9-3 SEC team bears the proof they that aren’t a top 15 team.
Holy crap Illinois has a VERY favorable schedule.

You can definitely see the wheels of the machine at work here, though I will say that ISU is about where I think they should be.
I believe a lot of us feel that way, every team should have to prove it before any meaningful poll comes out.
probably more so unproven....they have the hype, but people are tired of Tech getting hype every off season and then underperforming.....now they have a lot of hype.
In my opinion, if Tech doesn't make it to Arlington, this season is an epic fail for them. Can't invest that much into NIL/portal and then come up short.
Rankings are going to seem sloped away from Big 12, but a detail (unfortunate) is conference having so many teams considered realistic to win the league, instead of one or two consensus favorites.
If it didn't get incorporated into the "official" ranking when it unfolds, it'd be no biggie. But it's going to matter.
