If I played a course like that, I'd be tempted to just hit irons off the tee and short irons the rest of the way (8 & up), but the problem with that is the distances. Many of the holes are very long, and I think the carry to get to the fairway on one of them is 250 yards, which is a well struck driver for most amateurs just to get to the short grass.

The course has been all over golf youtube. You have guys like Bryson that shot par, but then you have guys like Grant Horvat, a plus handicap, play the course at +12. I do think the winner will be under par for the week, but probably in the -3 to -4 range.

I think it was last week, but heard Adam Scott played the front 9, hit every fairway, and was +3. Granted…he putts with the flag in (nose in air).

I know some people don't like course conditions like this, but I think it's an interesting change. Watching guys go double digit under par each time can get dull. This really forces players to choose clubs carefully.

I don’t mind it at all. What I do mind is players ******** about the conditions. The conditions are the same for everyone, just like every week on tour. Yes…I know AM and PM tee times can play different some times, but that happens everywhere else too. When the players start moaning, the media just runs with that and the next thing you know, the tournament itself is kind of forgotten.

Ended up that way, for sure, but that wasn’t the narrative going in. And I just used that one as an example.

Shinnecock in 2018 (Koepka winning at +1, a year after he demolished Erin Hills) and Winged Foot in 2020 (DeChambeau was an outlier at -6; the only player under par) were the last times the US Open played around even par.

I love the US Open for its difficulty.

But, I also don’t understand the complaints about how it’s so hard relative to par. When determine a winner, par doesn’t matter. Total strokes win the tournament. Par just allows us to keep track of who’s winning in the middle of rounds. It doesn’t matter in the end.

30+ years ago I was in Pittsburgh auditing for a couple of weeks. First Friday get out early. I swap to proper golf shorts and try and find Oakmont. It is a tiny sign and down a driveway past retirement/nursing homes and the scene opens up. This is Oakmont!

I park and just want to get to the pro shop and spend some $$$. Walking from my car a person tells me to leave as I am not properly attired(no shorts). I can't slink out quiet enough.

But I see an opening.

A sign for the Oakmont weekly Rotary Club meeting on Thursday is out on the entrance. My boss was flying out for a bit of vacation. She was part of the first of women to be welcomed to Rotary,.....after the Supreme Court forced it to do so.

The following Thursday morning the audit is done. The boss and I roll into the Oakmont parking lot for the weekly noon meeting. She is treated like royalty. She might have the first female Rotary member to be at their weekly meeting.

Afterwards we were asked about stuff. My mention of a little bit of golf skills led to an invitation to putt on the back of the 9th green.

I had some skill,.....still do. My 5' tap went 5' past the hole.
