Interesting piece from Kirk Goldsberry (one of the pioneers of NBA data visualization) in The Ringer. Basically argues that eliminating the corner three would result in more offensive creativity and more entertainment. He shows that the volume of 3s is way up (even by recent standards) while the league-wide shooting percentage is pretty stagnant around 36%, thus many more misses per game. His proposal is in the picture below.

edit to add: I voted yes. The NBA is efficient, but often at the expense of entertaining. Needs a shake up to force more styles of offense. I'd also support making the lane thinner again

I watch most of Haliburton’s games with pacers. They shoot the three amazingly well, Niang’s Cavs team did too until he was traded. The only guy i. Indy’s rotation who isn’t green light from three is ironically smallest guy on team, the backup pg. Every big can be lethal from three.

When these guys are open the shoot such a high % and not just from the corner. Obi Toppin struggled as a shooter in New York but over the past month for Indy he is shooting 60% from three at high volume. It’s insane.

I’m not sure I dislike this though, I really don’t know why it’s some objectively bad thing. The defense always picks up on the long playoff season. In the 90s that meant interior defense and now it means perimeter defense.

They should keep the 3 point line the full 23' 9" the entire length and widen the court if they want room for a corner 3.
It will never happen but I think this is what should happen if they are worried about the corner 3 being too easy. Widen from 50 feet to 55 feet which would also help solve the problem of too little space between the 3 point line and the sideline so guys are constantly stepping out when they start a drive to the bucket. The space outside the 3 point line would expand from 3 feet to 3'9" even with the continuous arc 3 point line.

Or better yet, go to 28.5 meters by 17 meters which might encourage FIBA to follow suit.

I think the nba could do it. All of worldwide basketball doing the same would take a lot of time.

People bash on the nba but a lot of this is today’s nba players are just more skilled. Every big on the Pacers would be ISU’s best 3 point shooter.

I was going to suggest widening the court a few feet, make it the same all the way around.

Or switch the three point line to the old 19 9 like high school and throw in a 4 or 5 point line that is like 40 foot.

In some ways. It’s not in trouble because players are getting worse, these shooters are just drastically better than prior eras, especially the bigs. Haliburton is flat out a better shooter than Reggie Miller, let alone a guy like Steph or Lillard.

I think a lot of it is branding. Imho Joker is the 3rd or 4th best basketball player of all time and the #1 passer of all time. If he was a guy that connected to casual fans with a Gatorade commercial it’s an instant boost. He doesn’t even connect with college fans who claim to love basketball which makes me think they are “meh” about basketball but nuts about college brands.

And no one cares.

My solution is adding a 4 point line for the NBA. Just make guys shoot it out further. Who would not like to watch games when you are down 4 but can still tie it up with a 4 pointer or down 3 and win it with a 4 pointer. It would have to be near half court though.

Doesn't he just take off back to Europe to his horse ranch every season. Not that I blame him makes plenty of money and gets to do what he enjoys on the off season

Not an NBA fan, but I follow Haliburton because he is amazing doing what he does and is a Cyclone through and through.

I started following Jokic when Monte' was his teammate and grew to love his game. I will randomly watch a little of a Nuggets game if I scroll by it just because of Jokic.

But his brothers are nuts.
