Iowa State Transfer Tracker 2025

Mason seems like a good get, scores at all levels, looks pretty skilled.

Doesn't do much for my growing concern we will lack the length / athleticism needed to compete against top teams.

I watched the entire highlight clip posted up thread. I see length—he’s actually pretty big for a guard, bigger and longer than both Keshon and Curtis—and I’m sure he’s athletic adjacent at the very least. He may not have that fast twitch with leaping ability we’ve really not had sans Hason Ward in some time. Only 3 rpg isn’t great for a 6’5” guard and no dunks in his highlights is kind of surprising. No idea if he can defend or not, but would have to assume at least a little bit if TJ is interested.

I've seen A LOT of comparisons to CuJo, but the Big Sky is no where close to the MAC.

I like this Williams commitment as it takes pressure off Toure or Bateman to come in and be forced contributors.

Lipsey
transfer 2 (Rohde?)
Milan
Jefferson
Cluff (Praying)

Heise
Williams
Mulder

That is a solid top 8 to work with!

Yeah, I watched the whole clip and didn't see a guy who uses length or athleticism. Uses his skills. Lower volume 3 point shooter (39 makes at 34%), so he'll need to score in the paint against big 12 teams.

Looks like a nice player for two years, just worry we have too many "below the rim" players, and not enough dudes. Watching teams in this tournament and sweet 16... they got some absolute killers from a length and athleticism perspective.

Yes NIL $ is always a factor.

Pleta might be in there too. If this plays out it does look like a 9 player rotation next year.

So we have Mitchell, Toure, and Pleta entering the transfer portal a year from now if you go by the projected lineups.
Should we play them over Tamin, Jefferson and potentially Cluff? Should they split minutes to make sure they all get a turn to play with the round ball?

Sorry, but if you’re not good enough or can’t execute the offensive and defensive game plans, you won’t play. If those guys are good enough for this level, they’ll play. I hope they are because we need some consistency from our HS recruiting classes.

I don't want to derail transfer talk, but I think the Ole Miss game is skewing our perception a bit. Auburn is athletic. Texas Tech is athletic. Arizona is athletic. Houston is athletic... With a healthy (or mostly healthy) Gilbert and Lipsey, this season's team did just fine against top-tier rosters/athletes. Even in the Ole Miss game the team's execution was getting Momcilovic more open looks than I think he'd had in weeks, he just couldn't hit, nor could Jones.

I'm not saying this transfer class will produce a Gilbert and a Jones, but we had just as many questions about their jump to P4 competition when they committed, and even once the '23-'24 season started. Gilbert took about a full season to develop, but became a more-than-capable Big 12 contributor, borderline star. Jones blossomed in January of his first season. I'm not insinuating that you don't trust the staff, but I think we have to accept that Iowa State can't afford many if any transfers whose athleticism leaps off their tape (no pun intended). Yet we later found out what Gilbert is capable of around the rim, and how Jones can contort his body to get shots/floaters off.

And, for all of our complaints about "misses," I do think high school recruiting can be a numbers game, so I'm really optimistic that Otz's classes only seem to be getting better. This year's class definitely has top-tier athletes, not just great basketball players, like maybe would've been said about Momcilovic. If you keep bringing in similar guys, eventually one (or two, or three) will hit, and then you really will have unlocked moneyball

If they're good, it won't be a problem.

There is no time for development anymore if you want to compete. The roster is a simple matter of who the top players are for the system, right now. If you're good, you play.
