Free RV parking with the ability to just tailgate/party all day while others pay $4,500+ to do that.
Got it.
Exactly, we didnt lose that lot, it was just converted to donor nonRV parking, and moved all RV spots to the new RV lot only. They made it so if you want to camp etc you must be in the RV lot, and required to pay the costs the others do. It would be the same if they paved one of the public lots and made it a donor lot. We arent losing spots, the requirement for said lot just changed to donor only.

I believe they increased the number of total RV spots with the new lot, and then standardized the cost for all RV spots. (yes, also increased the required donation etc. but that has pretty much happened for all spots too.)

If they had just eliminated the RV lots, and gave no alternative then eliminated 1/3 of the parking spots, people would have a legit gripe. But what has happened is they have built new spots to replace what was taken, and then standardized the donations for those locations. I agree costs have went up, etc. but those spots are still there if you choose to donate and pay the required amount.

I must have missed it, where did they move the public RV tailgate lot that I parked in for 20 years?

Likewise, I can only assume they reduced capacity in Hilton, because the $99 season tickets that I had for years are nowhere to be found.

It sucks, but the College Athletics Money Vacuum shows no sign of slowing down, and, honestly, it’s tough to argue that this is worse than A) any comparable programs in the country, or B) the good of days of parking right next to Trice 10 minutes before kickoff.

Key words here are “keep your eye on”. This is much like the mall that was planned east of I-35 on 13th street…. never happened. They tore out a lot of buildings on the north side of Lincolnway 3-4 years ago and nothing has happened since. Took forever to build the current outdoor aquatic center. Even the new indoor aquatic facility took years to finally happen. The Ames City Council is balking at giving KFC approval at the mall as they want a 10 car drive through not a 9 car one that was proposed.

Being a resident of Ames for over 30 years, this is not a good idea due to the proximity to the RR tracks along with parking. Even on games days on Saturday, you can’t find parking in downtown Ames. Then you figure in current traffic from Grand to Duff (south Duff is another story) which would get way worse if they went ahead with it.

I completely agree. I've lived in Ames for just over ten years, and the final results of projects often look very different from the original proposals. The Linc project, for example was proposed a couple of years ago, but it still hasn’t broken ground. I was told it was supposed to break ground in 2024. In my opinion, it’s turning into a disaster—no progress, just a big eyesore when driving through Ames.

Why can’t we have the football stadium be back next to Friley and Helser! I’m tired of all of these cool things happening away from dorms and classes!!

If we still played hoops at the Armory, I'm pretty confident there would be less parking tickets distributed since they wouldn't have nearly as much room for parking staff/vehicles.

What are the odds of those plans getting watered down by the resistance?

If history is any lesson... Ames' no growth, don't change, stop building crowd will do their best to kill this..

I could make the argument that Ankeny has added at least 10K people to it's population, plus all the secondary development because Ames' anti business community opposes growth and propsperity in Ames... The old guard wants to keep it a small town, when it could easily be over 100K people with a more pro-business and development mindset...

I’ve said this before, but the current and recent iterations of the city council have been very aggressive in terms of planning for and initiating growth. Are the efforts sometimes, in my opinion, misguided and overly influenced by a few developers? Did Covid throw a massive wrench into plans? Absolutely. But they haven’t been shy about planning/spending/annexing. It could definitely be worse (and has been).

This is 100% true. Maybe higher.
