They would have had to pay him a $345 million/ five year max contract if they hadn’t traded him. That’s a lot for some who allegedly doesn’t take his conditioning seriously.
It’s not a lot for a top 3-5 player in the NBA regardless of conditioning

The new owners aren't trying to tank the Mavs. They spent millions of $$$ on commercials and other lobbying efforts and the TX legislature is still a ways off from allowing gamblimg. The legislation isn't getting through the TX senate as long as Dan Patrick is Lt. Gov; his term is up in 2027 and he says he will run again.

Getting the gambling legislation passed is going to cost Sands way more and take a lot longer than they anticipated. They are going to have to expend at least 2 more years of lobbying funds, and then a bunch more to beat Patrick.

As such, no money to give Doncic the supermax, and Sands told Nico to get the best he could for him.

Nico and Kidd both looked like someone shot their dogs at the press conference.

Cuban “coincidentally” left shark tank when he sold the team. If you pay attention to his deals, A LOT were ones where he said that they would sell the stuff at Mavs games. Well, of course, he gets to double dip. They charge the company for space to sell the merch and then he gets a cut from the business.

He was a donkey, would insult the other sharks, and even pout if he he didnt get his way. I figured he would be difficult to deal with.

The Sharks suck. Especially Kevin. POS.

I agree with what you're stating here except the "no money to give Doncic" part. That is nonsense as the payroll will be approximately the same for the next few years with Davis, Kyrie and Klay on the roster. Long term salary cutting was not motivation by Sands and I have not read or heard any legit reporting on that motivation.

I think Nico was so obsessed on getting Anthony Davis that he was willing to get rid of Doncic. I don't think this had anything to do with the owners. From what I've heard, Nico had to explain to the owners why he wanted to trade Doncic.

I saw a clip of Matt Barnes show, he seems to think it was from the TOP that they wanted Luka gone. Apparently this owner is a married into money and bankrolled 47 campaign, so he's taking a page out of that playbook. Demean, demean, demean.

I really don't think so. I think that's just more believable the alternative which is incompetence. It's my understanding that the NBA has a salary floor near the cap so you have to be in the area of the maximum a team can have in payroll.

It's hard to not think this move has really jeopardized the next 5 to 10 years of the Mavericks. Obviously you lose Luka for an aging injury prone player but in interviews with former NBA players seems common message is I wouldn't want to go there. Imagine the coveted free agents will feel the same. They're going to need to draft really well

I am well aware of the DFW casino/gambling initiative and existing resistance to it by TX State legislators. The existing resistance will likely be alleviated over the next few years. If not, the new owners re-sell the team.

Trading Luka not part of a tanking scheme by Nico H and the new owners to eventually move the franchise to Vegas. It is a BS conspiracy theory. That said, the trade was an idiotic move by Nico based on an overreaction to Luka's conditioning process (which can fixed) and Nico being overly infatuated with Anthony Davis.
Boy that statement is not looking real good right now, going to be interesting to see how this plays out.

"While speaking on the broadcast, Welts said the Mavericks needed to be playing in a new arena by the 2021-32 season. The burning question is: where will this "new arena" be? "

This shows how inept the media is when it comes to posting an article.

Cuban is going to end up being so disasppointed he sold his team. That would be like us owning Iowa State, then selling them and they move to a different state.
He knew who he was selling to.
