Another weird thing, apparently almost 1,000 “firefighter's” right now are actually prisoners who are part of a fire training program, don’t really have a thought on the matter but found that very odd, especially only getting paid 10 bucks an hour for it.

That'll be a good job when they get released. IMO.

They often have trouble getting hired
“have trouble” is even putting it mildly: Despite the state trying to create a more clear path in recent years, former prisoner firefighters are still often outright prohibited from being hired upon release, despite their training and experience and having served their sentence. It’s pretty messed up!

satellite image of Alta Dena fire

aerial photo of alta dena fire. one of my co-workers home was right at the edge of the alta dena fire. she and her family were in the mandatory evacuation yesterday morning. estimates of total damage for the fires is over $50 billion and growing. Over 4,000 structures have burned and over 187,000 people were moved due to the fires. this event is unprecedented and if you aren't here you can't probably tell how bad it is.

Honestly, $10 / hr a great income for the prisoners.

Civilian strike teams/smoke jumpers are seriously underpaid. Like I was stunned at the rate for the grueling work they do and the risk.

Yeah the mandatory evacuation areas have been preyed on by looters trying to steal from areas where they know that no one is there. LA County has called in the National Guard to assist with securing these areas. A curfew was put in place as well. For as many good things humans do, we do a lot of bad things too.

At 5,000 structures that’s 10M per. That doesn’t sound outrageously low. If anything, it sounds high.

There are certainly many properties worth that much money but a lot is underlying land value. There are, of course, larger more expensive commercial properties as well.

Regardless, that number will continue to increase if containment efforts dont start to make progress soon.

The numbers keep going up. The structures number is way more than 5,000 now. It is 5,000 for just the Alta Dena fire. Probably double or triple that by the time they are done. But they have a funny way of counting those, sometimes it is homes, businesses, and autos too. Either way this is going to bankrupt the current FEMA funding pot / allocation of 28 or 29 billion.

In California the building costs thankfully are nowhere near the value. For example if a place is worth ten million. Rebuilding cost might only be 2 million. The land is so expensive out there. As an insurance agent I don’t expect to ever write in California against after this . They are going to have to have government insurance in California. Nobody is going to want to write ✍️ n that state

At this stage? Tossing out #'s...silly.

Sidenote. Apologies if mentioned earlier. State Farm said adios to this region, awhile back.
Can't say I blame them.
Lived in the Santa Barbara area for a spell. Zero regard for anything resembling, Hey folks, "yuh probably need to reduce the flammable stuff, surrounding your homes."
Nah, "pretty" trumped logical
