Hy-Vee's weirdest business decision yet?

Their new commercials about lowering prices are pretty cringey.

All I can think of when I see those spots is:

I went to the Hy vee in North Ankeny the other day and noticed they got rid of the self checkouts
They did that due to much theft. I needed to stop in there about a week ago and asked what happened to the lanes.

Was at Fareway recently and even they are starting to go away from Tones. They had a few Tones stuff on the shelf but it's mostly McCormick spices now. From what I've heard sounds like Tones is more concerned about making sure the big box retailers are stocked such as Wal-Mart which is why chains like Hy-Vee are dropping them because they can't get enough stock from Tones.

Seems like if they are no able to produce enough they would step up and build a new plant that can get them the spices.

Randy Edeker will be remembered as one of the worst CEO's in the history of Des Moines and Iowa companies..

Ron Pearson handed him one of the best companies, maybe the best company in the state and ruined it for marketing opportunities with celebrities and experimenting with non-essential business lines trying to chase margin..

I can tell you it's alive and well at the downtown location. There are always 2 or 3 of them posted up by the registers whenever I go to snag some Hy-Chi.
And occasionally they will walk a cart in or hold a door to be more personable LOL

A Costco membership for big ticket items (detergent, meat, cleaning supplies, diapers, etc.) and shopping at Aldi for produce and everyday items has saved us thousands of dollars the last few years. HyVee is an expensive Wal-Mart that seems to care very little about customers.

They did that due to much theft. I needed to stop in there about a week ago and asked what happened to the lanes.

Here’s how things have gone at my local HyVee:

-put in self-check lanes on both sides of the regular checkout area; only have one or two checkers working, plus at least one employee hanging out at each self-check area to watch customers not steal

-shut down the self-check lanes on one side, freeing up that employee to do whatever job they were hired to do in the first place; turn those lines into “HyVee Aisles” checkouts for the employees clogging up the aisles shopping for online customers; still don’t have enough checkers working

-put up signs telling customers the self-check lanes are for 20 items or less ONLY; maybe a couple more checkers visible; only occasionally have that employee watching over the self-check lanes to “prevent” theft

I didn’t care for the self-check lanes at first, as they are a blatantly obvious way to increase profits by driving down employee costs (and if I’m doing the job of an employee, where‘s my employee discount?); but I actually prefer to use them now if I’ve only got a few items. It’s way faster than waiting in line for a checker. Obviously if I have alcohol or some coupons, I’ll just let a human do the checking, but for a quick run in and out, it’s fine. And if it turns out the corporations are losing more to theft than what they were saving in employee costs, well - they should have thought of that.

These tags are everywhere where the price is the same as competition. I don’t think this is quite the flex they think it is.

Lol, I’ve noticed this. “Check it out, you save absolutely nothing by shopping here, just see how badly we were gouging you before we lowered all these prices!”

I saw one of these signs the other day showing the HyVee price was a penny less than Fareway or wherever. “You save .01!” the sign gleefully stated. Gee, thanks, HyVee, you guys are real generous.
