North Dakota State

Finally had a chance to watch.

125 - not good. Giving up stall points on your feet in the first period is not a great sign. NDSU controlled the match.

133 - pretty solid win. Burwick has been up and down in his career but Os looked aggressive and was in control.

141 - similar to his brother, J Frost has a huge gas tank. Their styles are very similar. Dominant win.

149 - I thought Fousek wrestled a decent match. Thought he had a chance to score in a few scrambles. NDSU 49 is their highest ranked guy.

157 - NDSU 57 was long and gave cody trouble early. Mixer seems like it doesn’t work often when guys go for it, but it worked here.

165 - Pretty similar match to 149. Was in the balance until very late.

174 - thought we’d see Magayna here for NDSU, but Riggins controlled, had several takedowns and a nice reversal for the major.

184 - off of the whistle looked like it could be a tough match but Nando was positionally sound and controlled after giving up that initial TD.

197 - looked gassed about 30 seconds in. Sluggish, not sure what’s up there. I think the Swiderski at 141 early season struggle comparisons are accurate.

285 - it was evident from the start that somebody was getting put on their back in this one. Nice cradle for Herrera.

Overall NDSU is not a good team this year, competition steps up next week in Nashville.

Multiple people are saying Carroll reminds of Casey’s true fresh season. Not even close, Carrol’s is way worse.

Casey dropped a bunch of matches early. But they were all 1-2 point losses to ranked guys like Happel, Schwartz, Woods, Matthews, Hart, Carlson. He wasn’t out there getting teched by guys and losing to unranked opponents. Casey was losing, but you could tell he was right there. Carroll is miles away.

He didn’t get teched, but had losses to Carter Young, Vasquez, majored by young Jordan Titus.

Probably not a great comparison, but the point is there are struggles.

Again, didnt lose to an unranked guy. Carroll got mauled by Cardenas and beat by this NDSU guy no one has ever heard of. The NDSU guy just lost to an SDSU wrestler who was 1-10 last year.

Really hope Carroll can turn it around, but right now I’m really skeptical. Not just this year, but ever.

It doesn’t compute that this guy can beat Kueter, Warner, and Cassioppi and then lose to whoever that guy was from NDSU.

Different weights, different weigh in rules, different competition level, different training, etc.

Not ready to give up on him at 197 this early but the returns so far are rough.

Plus IIRC Casey was a true freshman while CC is a second year. Perhaps 197 is too big of a cut for him…?

Really tough match up next week with Ohio State.

I think at full strength we would win that one, but as battered as we are it’s going to be a tough one.

Carroll has proven he's an elite wrestler. Every one of his problems is between his ears. He needs to figure that out. I just pray he's not another Terukina.

Chittum didn’t wrestle his best match up until the fall, but I thought he looked noticeably more muscular than last season.

Now obviously, I wasn’t there so maybe it was just the camera.

Did his dad move to ND too or still teaching at Columbus? Wondering if he is still being nutty in Iowa or in ND now?

Its not even close to Casey. I'm late on this but Carroll's effort on Sunday was single handily one of the worst performances I've seen in person from someone I expected to be in the starting lineup the next few years. Once he was taken down in P2 he was panting like a dog and staring at the clock waiting to be saved. Even when down late needing a takedown he made 1 half assed attempt in the last 1:30. Then he storms off the mat without shaking hands and has to be thrown back around by the coaches to at least give a half hearted handshake with the official. Just extremely disappointing.

Does the wrestling team work with a sport psychologist at all?
This is an excellent question . I know Iowa used one for years , a personal friend of my wife’s family. I can’t remember which wrestler it was that he hypnotized and the turn around was amazing .
