EIU is a border line tournament team at best, the B10 is not a very good conference in BB so that will help them. They have the same issues they always have with Mad Fran as a coach, when they hit their shots they can beat anybody, but they also go through stretches like last night where they cannot buy a basket and it will kill them. They hit 9 3-point shots in the 1st half and only 2 the second half. There style is fun to watch when its clicking, but not strong enough to advance once they get to tournament play, plus Fran is a choker.

Iowa will have to be a game or two north of .500 in league play to get a bid. Their non con schedule is really really bad and they really won't have a quality non con win.

I mentioned this at some point this week, but I thought Iowa State on a grading scale is an A and Iowa is a C.
(ISU is probably a 1-2 seed, Iowa is probably a 7-10 seed/bubble)

Iowa needed an A+ game to win and they IMO they probably played A / A-.
We played OK for most of the game but then turned it on in the last 5 mins.

That makes me feel much better about things knowing we can take someones A game and still come out on top on the road.

reminds me a lot of what Kansas and Duke do consistently every year when they get everyone's A Game and still find ways to win.
We did what championship level teams do. When we were down double digits in the first half, it felt like it should have been more. We just kept doing our thing and making iowa work.

The point that sticks out in my head was lipsey hitting the three when the crowd was probably it's loudest for Iowa. They were up 4 and it brought it to one. When he made that, I felt we were winning. That shot is what championship level teams do. We are one of them.

Yup. Iowa is really going to have to have a great conference run to make it. Their nonconference is one of the worst I’ve seen in quite some time. Other than us in it. What was the AD thinking?

This team has some grit to them. Some teams fold when their back is against the wall, not this team.

Auburn game was a complete collapse, but might be a pivotal piece to our success this year.

Any of our past teams would have absolutely panicked in the first half and would have been down 15-20 points. We did a really good job sticking to plan and not falling into the trap of chasing hot shooting. We had one little stretch around the 10 minute mark when we chucked three's on 3 straight possessions. We followed that up with getting a couple stops and pounding the ball inside. I want to say Iowa was up by 12 or 13 and we had it down to 6 in no time.

I have zero issues with having fun and enjoying the moment when out on the floor...however, I felt that Iowa players were almost too celebratory and...a bit cocky most of the game. It was almost like they surprised even themselves when they jumped out to a big lead. Again, be who you are...but the Iowa players (and bench) seemed to celebrate any "success" like it was the greatest moment of their lives!

Fran's teams are notorious for the fake tough guy act... I will give Garza credit though, he was a bad bad dude.

They play most of the better big ten teams at home so they’ll have chances. 5 of their 7 games vs current ranked all season are at home but that includes the superbowl yesterday.

When Iowa went up 13 first half a super nerdy guy…Thewel?…just went nuts celebrating like the Super Bowl was already won and that was the point I was 99% sure they’d lose. Such a nerdy joyful act that early in game almost guaranteed a loss.

The real reason Iowa was exhausted was from all of their in game celebrations. How do you expect them to keep the same energy level when you gotta celebrate that much.

I was at the Drake men's game last night. Drake players did some great things (throwing down dunks on alley-oop passes, driving the lane for dunks, knocking down 3-point shots). Not once did they pose to the crowd or do anything but run back down the court to play defense. Granted, they were not playing a "rivalry" game. But it was nice to see.

Sorry to derail the thread a bit

Feels weird being the big dog and every one is going to give us their best shot. Hawkeye were so fired up for this game and our guys seemed to take it as just another road game. Which I am fine with. Our guys just kept their composure (Unlike me, I lost my composure several times) and took them down. Being ranked 3rd we are going to get everyone's top shot. Better get used to this feeling. Ill be able to handle it better with no more games against Iowa. I just didn't want to lose to those dorks.
To this point, in the broadcast they said this year Iowa State traveled the day before and stayed overnight like they would a 'normal' road game further away. Previously they bussed to Iowa City the day of the game, but TJ said he wanted to switch that up and treat this like a typical road game with that routine.

they were 11-20 at one point, so missed their last 8 . . . . coming back to normal.
We stopped double teaming so much to give them wide open threes, Iowa is not a team you need to double team at all. Iowa's only chance was to continue hitting those bombs like they did in the first half which the double teaming definitely enabled. Glad we finally adjusted.

I was just saying something similar. That #3 was hitting nerdy poses like he just won nba finals mvp midway through the first half. I feel bad for some of the kids losing their biggest game of their lives but that kid really had it coming.

Had to mosey over to a Hawk message board and its hilarious how their narrative compares to the one here during the game. Somehow the refs were favoring both teams, depending on who you ask. :) Also, we apparently have a travelling problem (or not, since it was never called) I love basketball ;)

ISU fans clearly like Fran more than Iowa fans!

Frustrated that I had to miss the game due to an obligation I couldn't get out of but was scoreboard watching seeing that they were down by 9 midway through the 2nd half got annoyed for a moment but immediately thought to myself that they would come back. I fully believe this team can win any game under any circumstance, never felt that way about an Iowa State team before. It's a pretty awesome feeling. Go Clones!!!

Just looking at the box score and it looks like the boys picked up Gilbert having a rough game with the always reliable and extremely underrated Curtis Jones and Jefferson picking up the scoring slack.

The refs really let EIU get away with a lot of grabbing on our drives to the basket without a foul. Jones should have had a couple free throws after making the basket. Also noticed they missed two early push in the back during rebounds on Freeman. The guy is smart, and does it early when everyone is looking at the rim, he just two handed someone in the back a couple of times and was standing there for the rebound.
That crazy layup Jones made should've been an and 1. Freeman fouled him

The refs were actually way worse toward ISU second half when we outplayed them by 17.

That call late where Harding intentionally fouled Gilbert to stop a fast break and they called it out of bounds on Gilbert but it wasn’t even out of bounds…that could end up the worst call of the season. I mean that’s an obvious foul 99.9999999% of the time. He jumped on his back like an angry little goblin.
