Agree. He does seem a bit odd at times. And he if does well and leaves right away...that his just the way things work. Will be interesting to watch him put together a program out "west".
Bill's contract might only be a 3 year deal. So what? Head Coaches are hired with 5-8 year deals and fired in 2 years. If Bill fails, then he will be gone in 3 years. Happens all the time. If he does well, then he stays on or transitions to an assistant.
Coaching in general is a short-term hire! When elite schools hire assistants, look at their resumes. Moving every couple years is the norm. Coaching is a nomdic lifestyle for most at the assistant level. Having coached for Bill will be a resume building, not a negative.
College coaching has changed with the portal and NIL era. And it's going to change in a big way with the roster restrictions and set player payments. It's closer to a pro system than traditional college system. That's why some current college coaches are leaving the business or HC becoming coordinators.
I don't think Bill had an issue hiring coaches when he was with the Patriots. Why would it be a problem now?
I don't question his ability to identify quality assistants...I just wonder who would jump jobs to go there unless money was that much better? Would someone leave Ames to coach for him for equal money or a slight raise? Leave a program who's coach is locked in...to coach for a legend that is experimenting in a new experience? As far as the Pats...he was in control...it was surprising that he was let go...he had a run that people wanted to be a part of due partially to him being in a position he was locked into for a long period of time.
But after 3 more years? The dude will be pushing 80.
Why in the hell, would anyone want to hire an 75yr+ old coach, and why in the hell does a 75yr+ old millionaire want to continue to coach?
I get it if he hadnt retired etc already, to just continue to coach, but to completely restart your career? Why?
And why does someone pay him that amount to come there with no CFB experience, no chance at longevity of any kind, its just a strange hire any way you look at it.
He didn’t retire he was forced out of New England. He’s been trying to get an NFL job the whole time but no one wants him. He doesn’t know anything else in life but football so he wants to continue,
Also 10mil per year isn’t a lot for a top flight coach at a school like UNC. They are doing this to try to be relevant in football teh way Colorado did with prime. Boost ratings, boost visability, recruiting, etc.
I don’t think he will find any real success there but it’s a no brainer for UNC
If I was a Carolina fan I'd probably prefer Mullin over Belichick.
Wait, 10 mil isnt a lot? that would be right there with the top coaches salaries, like in the top 10 in all CFB. Mac was making $5M. This is for a coach with no actual CFB experience, which may or may not be a big deal. We all know CFB is moving more and more towards a professional league.
I get it, but its still pretty dumb, to me.
I also get he was "forced" out but the dude is worth like $70M, is in his 70s. At some point its just time to ride off into the sunset.... with your 24 year old cheerleader girlfriend.
Oh I totally agree with the last part, no idea why he wants to not only keep coaching but try a totally different path of coaching. I think he just loves football that much.
But yeah for a guy many consider to be one of the best coaches of all time and with the name recognition he has 10mil isn’t very much.
UNC might not be getting P2 money but they are a top ten endowment for public schools so the money isn’t an issue.
Bill is a great hire for UNC- they are already no longer an afterthought. This is giving them a valuation boost that they could only hope a candidate like Tommy Rees could eventually achieve.
But $26 million in staff cost and only $13 million for players, in the pay to play era? In another decade I think we’ll find that to be kind of backwards.
No but it’s an indicator of the wealth of the alumni base to fund many things the AD could need.
Agree. Not convinced Belichick is an upgrade over Mack Brown.
He was the run game coordinator for some pretty decent run games, he was qualified. It didn't work out but you don't get to use hindsight to retroactively say he wasn't qualified for it because he failed so spectacularly.
He was inconsistent as OC even in the best of his tenure but it didn't really go off the rails until he became quarterbacks coach (along with OC). That he was certainly not qualified for.

Josh Pate. This hire, together with ken kendrick's massive cash infusion, has changed the landscape of the big 12. Am I a fan of this hire? You bet I am. As a football coach, RROD has won at every level of football, most recently Jacksonville State.
