Football Attendance Against Cincinnati

It's not that complicated. We have a cap on the number of ISU fans who are willing to go to a game. It takes higher stakes, a good game time, and comfortable weather for us to sell out a game that doesn't involve Iowa or UNI.
And UNI isn't a sure thing, anymore. We sold just over 58k against them last year, but that was coming off a disappointing 4-win season.

That's also a growing cap though. The cap used to be a lot lower. It's incredible how much the fan base has grown over the last 15 years or so.

Wanted to start a discussion on this after listening to Williams and Blum. Wondered what other peoples thoughts were.

I think there are a multitude of issues going on here.

  • High cost of tickets this year.
Ticket prices have remained really high this year. I think there is a point where people have just spent their budget on tickets already. This game ticket prices did end up going down but how many had already decided not to go based on high prices for previous games.
  • Weather conditions
It was quite cold and kind of a gross day. Yeah it is November in Iowa but it still hurts attendance.
  • Two game losing streak
I think the two game losing streak and mounting injuries took a lot of wind out of our sails.

I think that regardless of views there are a lot of people with bad attitudes for society as a whole right now. How many people are just frustrated with everything right now.

What do people think the reason for low attendance was.

High ticket costs? Give me a break. The cost isn't coming down.

Weather conditions? It was actually pretty nice during the game. Good fall football weather.

Two game losing streak? Probably, we have a lot of fair weather fans. Even with a 2 game losing streak we are in the middle of a top 3 all time season.

Ticket prices? They were so cheap I almost got in my car Friday night and drove from Colorado.

I realize the situations are different, but at CU you can't get in the building for less than $200, and they're packing it.

Previous games have been really high compared to normal prices for Iowa State games. I think some people have just spent their budget already and some didn’t even look based on what prices were even at the beginning of the week.

No doubt. I grew up in the 90s as the only Iowa State fan in class. When I go back to central Iowa, I'm always blown away by the amount of ISU gear in the area compared to my childhood. I remember going to the Iowa State-Nebraska game in 2002, and attendance was almost 52k. It's pretty incredible we're worried about that number today.

While the cap is growing, I think the growth has stalled a little bit. We'd need a few seasons in a row like this one to start grabbing more casuals. Basketball helps though.

There isn't another UNI game on the books until 2028. Who knows if those games will even still be a thing by then, that's after the new CFP agreement.

If Saturday's weather was 'gross'. You really won't want to see what a "way too early forecast' has for K-State...

Abu might like it though.

I think people are really overlooking the effect the opponent has on this, too. Nobody is gonna get excited about seeing Cincy come into town. Period.
I actually have never understood this argument. Maybe it’s just because I’m almost exclusively an ISU fan rather than a college football fan but beyond a few players I don’t know hardly anything about our opponents. I’m not going to watch any opposing teams players even in the slightest. I’m showing up to watch our team.

This was a decent Big 12 opponent - what’s there to be put off by?

I noticed there weren't as many families with kids and older people. Those demographics are probably less likely to attend with colder weather and a late kickoff. It's many factors though since Cincy isn't an attractive opponent and we lost two in a row.
The only reason I wasn't there is because of youth travel basketball. I'm sure I wasn't the only family with this issue. I had my lower level seats on Ticketmaster for $30 each and they didn't sell. I had my parking pass for $30 and it didn't sell.

Almost every game I've sold my parking pass for $150 and up and went with other people.
