Wanted to start a discussion on this after listening to Williams and Blum. Wondered what other peoples thoughts were.

I think there are a multitude of issues going on here.

  • High cost of tickets this year.
Ticket prices have remained really high this year. I think there is a point where people have just spent their budget on tickets already. This game ticket prices did end up going down but how many had already decided not to go based on high prices for previous games.
  • Weather conditions
It was quite cold and kind of a gross day. Yeah it is November in Iowa but it still hurts attendance.
  • Two game losing streak
I think the two game losing streak and mounting injuries took a lot of wind out of our sails.

I think that regardless of views there are a lot of people with bad attitudes for society as a whole right now. How many people are just frustrated with everything right now.

What do people think the reason for low attendance was.

Won't discredit all your points, cause they are valid but mostly I think it was the 2 game losing streak and cost of tickets.

Weather and views aside, I think if we were 9-0 heading into that game , even with weather, if tickets were a little bit lower, I think there are more people there even with the weather and everything else. I could be wrong but that's my take

Night game fatigue is also a factor. I was at the game, but I thought about skipping it. I live 2 hours away and getting home between Midnight and 2 am gets old. Also - my Dad won't go with me to night games- he is older and has a harder time seeing at night. The walk to and from the stadium is a challenge for him at night.

I think the ticket price thing is huge. I might go to one game a year now when I had season tickets for 49 years. So when a game like Cinci comes up, I am not giong to make the trip. I will go to Iowa or some other bigger game. However, I won't be paying all that money after a two game losing streak, Not so great weather. I can watch at Home (First Half) and then go to the local bar (second Half) and save some money. I am fine with them charging whatever they want for tickets and parking, they just have to realize they are pricing a lot of folks out of the market right now.

I was there. Enjoyed the game. 6:00 game may have been better attended. I think some people get too wrapped up in the result thing. Why did people feel it was a better value when we played Texas and OU? We usually lost those games. The games are actually more entertaining now when we play our peers. Is it just upsets that people want to see?

I think people are really overlooking the effect the opponent has on this, too. Nobody is gonna get excited about seeing Cincy come into town. Period.

I wouldn't doubt this to be true. Even with an undefeated team we weren't selling out games until a few days prior to the game itself. Makes me wonder if people have decided, even subconsciously, that they'll continue to show up as long as we're winning, but once we're out of contention* we're just going to lose some casual fans who might have showed up for Texas.

That said, November games have always been more challenging. My family has a block of tickets and some of them just go unused as the season wears on. The novelty wears off, the weather gets colder, kids get busier, etc.

(*I understand we aren't mathematically out of contention, but it's not difficult to imagine a more casual fan seeing ISU get its doors blown off by a 2-6 team and deciding they'll just watch on TV from now on.)

We split our season tickets this season, went to 3 games and have to say for me that is plenty. Just not as much fun as it used to be for me personally as our tailgating group has all moved away.
But overall the attendance was fine, ISU just needs to face the fact that we need to grow the fan base, every season when it gets late in the year, people just stop coming. Saturday was a little chilly, but overall very good atmosphere for a person to come out and watch.
Winning brings in fans, we just have not done enough of it over the years for more people to buy in and purchase tickets, everything else is just people coming up with reasons not to go to the game.
