I got summoned for jury duty in Polk county in December. I have never done jury duty before. This summons is for Grand Jury. Has anyone had any experience with Grand Jury? I can't find much information about how long the term is etc, other than it is to review evidence to determine if the case goes to trial.

Generally you are on call for 3 months from what my wife has had. Now the Grand jury is the best jury because it is grand.

You won't find out much till the Fri before. It's a pool, so you can get put on any number of lengths.

Jury Duty - Polk County Iowa

How long is Grand Jury duty?

If you are selected to sit on the Grand Jury, you will be on-call for three months. No one knows in advance how often you will meet. When there is a need for the Grand Jury, the Jury Clerk will notify you when to report. On average, the Grand Jury meets three days during each three months.

I was on jury duty earlier this year, but not a grand jury, but they will send you a phone number and email address to call every Friday, or if they have your info. they will text you on Friday if you have to show up for court on Monday. If you are going to be out of town, you have to contact them and inform them that you will be gone during that time and the reason for leaving. We went on vacation for a couple of weeks and I had to phone them, giving them the dates I was leaving and getting back.
For what is worth, the two or three months I was on jury duty, we never had a trial in the county, so I was never called to come in.

My boss had to be on call for federal jury duty for six months. He was on the jury for one case.

I could be wrong but I think awhile back @Mr Janny told one of the funniest stories I had ever read regarding jury selection.

I was on jury duty a couple of years ago. While waiting on the courthouse, they made me move my car to a different parking ramp so I could get re-imbursed for parking. While moving my car, they called my name for a case, but had to go with someone else. the people that got called into the courtroom had to leave temporarily because the lawyers started fighting each other (verbally, not physically). The trial for that case was supposed to be really long so I might have lucked out.

l ended up getting selected for a different trial (drug possession case). The trial lasted three or four days. The person was found guilty but it was not an easy case as the we deliberated for a long time. The other jurors and I thought the defense lawyer did a good job, honestly.

It was a pain in the *** but it was a in interesting learning experience for me.

The one about the crazy lady who expressed her belief in about a hundred conspiracy theories, and was 100% a nutbar, getting selected for the jury, while I, sitting next to her, and answering questions in a calm, logical manner, got kicked to the curb? Because that's the only jury duty story I have.

Not Jury Duty but I get to go to court to testify in a divorce Wednesday. Husband and wife are both clients and business owners, really contentious divorce that they have both spent waaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyyy to much money on. Me having to testify is stupid because everything I am going to testify to is on their tax returns and business financial statements.

Yes. This sounds right. I remembering reading the way you described it and was crying at my desk at work in laughter. I had a similar but not nearly as comical experience and can 100% relate.

Found it. For those that haven't read, enjoy. The term "unfiltered batshit" just slays me.

I was in the jury selection pool for a case where a woman was fighting a DUI charge. I made it through the first round of cuts and the prosecution was going down the line asking us questions. He came to me and asked "Do you believe that we should always assume police reports are the truth?"
I said something like "I think it's their job to record the facts of a case to the best of their ability, but there's always the chance that a mistake is made, so it's important that there's evidence to back up their account"

He asked the lady next to me the same question. She went on this diatribe about how she never trusts the police, because her son had been arrested multiple times for selling drugs, and now when she leaves her house, the police follow her in unmarked cars, and she caught a guy going through her garbage trying to find evidence to use against her son, and she saw a helicopter following her on the way to the courthouse today, and she's sure they're going through her car right now in the parking lot, so no she does NOT believe a police report. She wouldn't even believe video footage, because they can alter that, and make it look like you're doing all kinds of things that you didn't. It was a 5 minute stream of unfiltered batshit. And by the time she finished, there were wide eyes and concerned looks across the entire jury pool.

So when it came time to make the final selections, I didn't know if I would make it, but I figured for sure, the loon next to me would be shown the door.

Nope.

I got cut. She made the final jury. I have no idea what the prosecutor was thinking. There's not a chance in hell she was going to side with the police. She flat out said so.

Curt, they had to put you under oath to make sure that the CPA that did the tax returns was legit...;)

My 19-year-old daughter got called for jury duty in Polk County; we live in Dallas County. She filled out the questionnaire, figuring since it was Polk County, it would error out since we live in Dallas County, nope. She called on Sunday night, and it said she had to report; when they went to check her in on Monday, they had no record of her. She said to the woman, I live in Dallas County, not Polk County, to which the lady replied, I don't know how you ever got selected for jury duty in Dallas County. Needless to say, my 19-year-old was not too happy. This is the second time someone has happened at our house; I was selected for jury duty in Polk County, and I haven't lived in Polk County since 2003.

I laughed because last month I got selected for a jury where a woman was also fighting a DUI charge. Nothing this insane from the jury screening though.

It is interesting sitting through a case where on the surface you feel it's cut and dry, but then you realize there's more layers to the onion. Also with all the legal process that needs to be done correctly.

It's not necessarily a *fun* experience serving on a jury, but I did come out with a greater appreciation of the process.
