Has the rot started to creep in?

Just curious, what do you expect out of a bowl game? Other than obviously wanting to see a W, how has it been anything other than a scrimmage, especially in this day and age. Since they expanded bowls, you can make a case for it being a glorified scrimmage, especially most of the bowls Iowa State has been in.

It’s just an excuse for fans to take a vacation, IMO
A bowl game can be whatever ISU fans want to make it.

We took over Las Vegas to play a middling MWC team. I have little doubt we will take over Dublin. Just give me another reason to go watch them play.

I agree. I just think if you are going to a regular non-playoff bowl game, the way it is currently constructed, the product on the field should be looked at as a scrimmage and getting guys PT or a send off to the seniors. Otherwise, as far as the game goes, you will probably be disappointed.

If you look at the program from 10,000 feet, what do you see? You see a young, hungry coach that took a bad program to relevance and then had dropped off sharply. We're still very much in the nose dive and there are no signs that we're going to recover. I have no faith in Campbell anymore and I predict that he'll be out after next season.

Gold.

I wouldn’t call a bowl a scrimmage, but An exhibition game. It still goes into your overall season record. Players and coaches still want to win this game because they are competitors. They might have a different preparation/gameplan, but they still want to win.

I expect that the effort is made to win just like every other game that counts on the record. A scrimmage, to me, doesn't affect win loss record. Based on the post that was made, I don't know how the game was handled other than that it was different from other games, which to me sounds like less effort to win.

That’s just silly. No player or coach is going in with less effort. Are they trying different things? Maybe, but the time to do it is in the last game of the season that means literally nothing in the grand scheme of college sports. People remember conference/national titles. Almost no one is going to look back in 10 years and talk about how a loss in a meaningless bowl games changed the trajectory of their program. Not in this era of college football anyway.

Agree with the bold. I do not know how the game was handled. But based on the outcome it didn't seem real good, frankly it was very uninspired. So my point still stands, if bowl games are going to be a ho hum, whoop de doo game, I'll just watch on TV and let the locals enjoy it. Especially if its in freaking Memphis TN in late December.

I am reading this as they put little emphasis on the game and treated it like a scrimmage. Please correct me if I am wrong. And this is very OK if that is what the program needed and will need in the future.

But I will have to consider this when determining if a bowl game trip is worth it. Based on the game, I am so damn happy I didn't effort to make the trip to Memphis last year.
That is how I understood it to be. I would add, I believe the "Scrimmage" mentality extended into the Bowl preparation practices as well. I am not a person who travels to bowl games so I did not look at it from that perspective. I view what "possibly" transpired last season for the bowl game as a catalyst for the roster continuity and depth of this year's squad. I, for one, would pass up beating Mempis last year for the current shot we have at the playoffs. In my opinion, without the depth and continuity ISU would not be undefeated and vying for a playoff spot. For clarity, I believe I heard this from Blum on a Williams and Blum Wednesday pod cast going back to the dead zone in sports, (The end of basketball and before the start of football.) It was a pod cast that had NIL in the title.

Bowl games (outside of the Playoff) largely won't exist in 10 years in my opinion, unless something drastically changes.

I think a 16 or 24 team (essentially making the conference championship games into pseudo playoff games) is where it finally stops and bowl games die. Which I'm fine with do we really care about/need 6-6 Wisconsin playing Colorado State at the end of the season? Who asked for this

The city tourism boards that run them.

Bowls are never going away. There's always going to be a place for teams to play that exhibition game at the end of the year.

That writing is certainly on the wall. They will probably be replaced by more regular season games at neutral sites, in attractive destinations.
