$5,000+ for a season of football games is not doable for most families right now. Throw in a kid whining that they want an $8 hot dog... I can see why it wouldn't be worth it.

You can try to reason that G5 losses and what not; it's not that. Fans can't afford it.
You don't have to spend $5000 for season tickets. There are many much more affordable options. I agree that the economy has made cash tight for many, but games can be pretty reasonable if you want them to be. $60-$70 a ticket plus parking.

Ya that game was an all timer. My personal favorite I've attended followed closely by the tornado game.
Indeed, that TCU game was amazing. I went to a Boston College game on Friday night with my brother and nephew. BC beat Florida State that night and I had to rush the field because my nephew wanted to go down there. Then I had to catch a plane at 4 am on Saturday morning. Made to Ames with my 17 year old son for the kick off. Rushed the field again that day too.

A side note, I had a parking pass that day and was driving around looking for a spot in my section. I found one but people had their tailgating set up in the empty space. I tried to pull in and they all started yelling at me. I said I was sorry but that was the only space I could find. They told me I should have came earlier, very little did they know that wasn't possible for me since I just flew in from Boston. My hope is that cyclone fans are not so inconsiderate and rude to other Cyclone fans.

I've attended all of the Cyclone home football games (and numerous away games) for decades.

We get a lot of enjoyment out of game day, but the older I get, the harder it is for me to keep justifying the amount of money my wife and I are spending (equivalent to approximately $500 per game) to sit through a 4 hour game; in weather that is too hot, too cold, or too wet; sitting on an uncomfortable bleacher; and rubbing my body up against strangers whose butts are half in my seat space.

Each year, I start thinking this will be my last. One of these years, it will be.

I'm speaking about families. For families, $5,000 a season is on the low end when it's all said and done

i hate being around people, especially in large crowds and i feel like this is a growing sentiment among most everyone. PTSD from the covid years, divisiveness, general over stimulation from social media, etc...

yikes. that is a moderately priced, moderately sized TV, per game. you could have a half dozen 50" TVs on a wall of your house by the end of the season.

I have been going to game since I was a kid and last year was the first I actually felt like I would prefer watching a game at home instead of person. The large reason is because of all the stoppage time and length of games. I pretty much dread whenever i see that timer guy run out on the field with a clock that ranges from 2:30 to 5 mins. Football games are ranging from 3-4 hours while HS games are just over 2 hours.

This is a nationwide issue which is why we see attempts to incentivize people coming to games with both bad and good ideas like DJs and gameday hosts. I personally think we should take a page out of minor league baseball and find more things that interact with crowds like more trivia, fan interviews, and crowd games (like in basketball with 5 in 35)

I am getting tired of going to games and feeling like I'm watching commercials with a side of football while at home you can switch to other games and use your bathroom. I understand that money is king in college sports so I just need to suck it up.

I'm still going to all the games but that because I think Iowa State is trying to fix/improve the gameday atmosphere. I am just turning into a grumpy old man.

Yep. Cyclone club donation (gold level), two season tickets, parking pass, concessions, tailgating= $500/game.

We ended up dropping our season tickets this year. If tickets would have stayed the same we might have still done it.

The reality is going to all of the games if you don’t have a big group to tailgate with is much more a chore than it is worth. For my sister and I both in the earlier stages of our careers it just is hard to justify. We have tickets for Saturday and are consider a couple more games but football just takes to much investment.

I still have basketball season tickets with my aunt and uncle but get a heck of a lot more value out of those.

I’m hoping that with CyTown we will see an improvement in the value for football. I also think it is important to improve parking options for non tailgaters.

Family of four can go to the game for $70 x 4 = $280. 7 games x $280 = $1960. With parking you are probably looking at $2500. Not cheep, but if you compare that to any NFL or NBA tickets it is very inexpensive. I bet it is inexpensive compared to most P4 teams too.

I don't know how big a family we're talking about here, but the Junior Cyclone Club has passes for $85 for kids up through 12th grade. That's tickets for every home football game, plus volleyball, women's basketball, wrestling, gymnastics, soccer, and softball. Then it's $250 for a parent pass to go along with them.

For a larger family of 6, that's $840 for a get-in price ([$250 * 2] + [$85 * 4]) for the whole season. That's not nothing, and obviously that price goes up if you want real seats instead of hillsides, plus parking, food, etc. But that's a far cry from "$5,000 a season is on the low end."

I guess I dont understand why its a big deal? It’s 300 seats. Not 3,000 or 30,000 empty seats. 300 out of 63,000 wont change the atmosphere for this game

I don't get it either. But there has been a pretty clearly coordinated push from everyone at CF on social media and in the podcasts to sell this game out. Which, fine, we all want sellouts. But there's been a weird urgency to it.

Even if there's a sellout, I'm guessing there will be more than 300 empty seats trickled throughout the stadium from people who either couldn't make it and couldn't sell them, extra corporate seats, or people who hit it too hard in the lots.

'But if you compare'...

Ya... families aren't going to those either.

Blum made the comment (paraphrasing) "People sat through many bad years and now we are doing what we always hoped"...but I think the true die hards from the last 30 plus years ARE still showing up and enjoying it....but as many have shared (costs, tv viewing enhancements, kids/prioritities) probably have contributed to not being sold out.

It could also be possible we have added as many fans as were available in a small state.

I just looked up tickets for four and at about $80-100, I think it is also a lot to just assume families can just drop $400+ for entertainment. Believe me, I LOVE game day and all that goes with it. BUT, I also dont' think it's fair to just assume average people have that much expendable income (and don't get me going on folks that "fan shame" likening ones fandom to how much they spend/donate)

People tend to value experiences at the end of the day.

People like to say they value experiences, because it’s a trendy meme. pushed by the people that are trying to part consumers with their money.

“Don’t think about the money, think about the experience”.

It’s marketing 101. Probably brought to you by the same people that brought us “Marlboro Country” and “Camel: Where a Man Belongs”

Sick of the "this isn't a sellout" narrative. Are we honestly saying that for all games labeled "sellouts," media/announcers go into the ticketmaster site and make sure that there are no singles still available to purchase from the school? For all intents and purposes this game has been sold out for a week. Stop the wringing of hands (and yes this includes CF staff).

Agree with this 100%. My 80 yr old uncle (alumnus) has been a season ticket holder/donor for 40+ yrs and he gets grief every time he pulls into the lots 45 mins before kickoff and can't find a parking spot because everyone doubles up their tailgates and ******* at him to show up earlier.

Sometimes its not always great to be around cyclone fans haha!
