Simple. It's freaking expensive, and the games are televised. We try to go to one football and one basketball game every year. That's all a lot of people can do.

Bingo. Wife and I could go Saturday, but then we have to find get a grand parent to do overnight babysitting, find a place to stay Saturday night, drive to Ames from Eastern Iowa, and get tickets. All of which cost time, personal equity, and money.

Or we can stay home, put the kids to bed, and watch a 3 hour game for free

It’s frustrating seeing college games take 4 hours to complete when you turn on the NFL the next day and watch all their games completed within their allotted time slot.

Outside of OT or weather there’s no good excuse for college games to drag out the way they’ve let TV do to them.
The NFL's product is so much better than the CFB. They have figured out how to speed up reviews, split screen commercials, etc.

If CFB keeps going the way it does and more people get disintrested, does that give us a better shot at getting an NFL team in Iowa where the full state supports a single team? Could be a long-time theory play out, as you know the NFL is watching this like a hawk to see if they can expand / make more $ as well - and that is an animal the P2 cannot touch.

You guys know what the attendance to the 2017 TCU game was? 56,259.

That was our first game as a ranked team in Jack Trice in over a decade. Playing a Top 5 team. If you go back and watch the game, every shot of the crowd looks full. The camera is shaking on TCU offensive plays in the 4th quarter. Everyone who attended said it was one of the loudest environments they've ever been in.

Right now we've sold over 61,000 tickets for Saturday. If it doesn't technically sell out, who gives a ****? You will in no way be able to tell the difference between what's there and a technical sell out. The goal is to fill the stadium and provide a raucous atmosphere. That's already guaranteed.
Ya that game was an all timer. My personal favorite I've attended followed closely by the tornado game.

Because the world is more expensive than ever and everyone has their limits. No Iowa on the home schedule hurts. It certainly has nothing to do with losing to Ohio and Memphis. Dear God.

I wouldn't say nothing, but it might be reason # 786 why.

For me: I can't afford season tickets currently, and I live in Wisconsin anyway, so. But, usually I like to go to 1 or 2 games a year.

I check on the re-sale sites, and it is insane how much it costs for nosebleeds. To be perfectly honest I'm not sure I can rationalize paying that much to sit all the way up and sit through a million TV timeouts, pay for freaking water, and get my ears blown out by the ****** speakers.

I'll be going to homecoming because I'll be in the Alumni Band haha, but it's just hard to make this work consistently.

If I lived closer I'd probably go more, but I can certainly see why sales are down. Prices are up and the experience is worse. Pretty obvious to me.

There are many free water stations in the stadium.

Correct. People are trying to overcomplicate the reasons why.

It's expensive and most people can't afford it right now. One weekend could cost around $1,000 for a family. Watching it at home or with friends on a comfortable couch just makes too much sense.

Edit: Also, I have season tickets and I refuse to buy stadium food, I'm not paying $12 for a crappy pork tenderloin

Was curious after the conversation today about being surprised the game isn’t a sellout:

Since the S End zone was bowled in, there have been 15 sellouts. All have occurred in odd numbered years when we play Iowa at home. If the Baylor game were to sell out it’d be the first in an even numbered year in at least 10 years. When you look at the attendance trends over the years, it appears that odd numbered years can generally have a 3000-4000 per game dip in attendance. I’ve noticed secondary market tickets are going for quite a bit more this year even though attendance is down. I assume you have a group of people who are buying season tix for the Iowa game in odd numbered years then dumping the rest of the season on the secondary market.

Probably is something to personal financials playing a part for some attending or not if you can pick up cheap tickets on the secondary market or not. At the end of the day it’s not an excuse but a reality that cost is a factor and that this year isn’t an anomaly from prior trends. You’d hope that the team’s success will push those in the fence to fill the Jack in October and I bet it will be close to full on Saturday.

I can only speak for myself, but I put some thought into going but if I take my family of 6 just the tickets and a parking pass is going to be well over $600. That's not including what we'd spend on food, drink, etc. Then by the time you get home it's midnight and you've got to get up early for kids activities the next day.

As much as I'd love to go, there hits a point where it's just alot easier and alot cheaper to sit at home with my own food and my own beer, and when the games over I can switch it off and go to bed.

Once the kids are grown and gone I'll be happy to pony up for 2 tickets and spend the day tailgating. But with the price to take a whole family, plus the extremely limited free time we have now, it's just not in the cards.

We struggle to sell out every game for a couple of reasons in my opinion. The first is very simple, the visiting teams for the most part bring few if any fans, so our fan base is carrying the load when Baylor or WV bring 500 fans at most and turn the rest of their tickets back into the university. We know that UNI and EIU are going to purchase all their tickets, that is not going to happen for most of the conference schools.

2nd our fan base is not used to winning, and we all feel, that is going to come crashing down, and we will be disappointed again, like we have been in the past. Keep winning, and the fans will show up, but we as a fan base are not over all those crappy football seasons yet.

It is my experience that Iowa State football games are such a bargain compared to professional sporting events. I feel that the overall game day experience including tailgating and the game is second to none at Iowa State. I can’t swing season tickets to the Colts or the Pacers, but Cyclone season tickets offer many different reasonable options. I had ISU football season tickets living in Indiana for 4 years. I hope my schedule allows me to get them again in the future.
Amen- Cyclone fans are cheap!! While prices have gone up, its still cheaper to be a season ticket holder for Iowa State then the team out East.

ISU vs UND - 3:01
ISU at Iowa - 3:29
ISU vs Ark State - 3:09
ISU at Houston - 2:56 (!!!)

FBS games on average were down to 3:23 last season, with NFL allegedly at 3:12. And 7-8 minutes of the difference between the two is the length of halftime.

$5,000+ for a season of football games is not doable for most families right now. Throw in a kid whining that they want an $8 hot dog... I can see why it wouldn't be worth it.

You can try to reason that G5 losses and what not; it's not that. Fans can't afford it.

As someone entering their 30’s and starting a family, even with my wife and I having above average paying jobs, disposable income is very hard to come by in this economy. Every dollar matters.

I can make the occasional game and small donations to WeWill make sense, but it’s hard to save enough to buy into the whole football season ecosystem.
The Mobile Pass is a great option. Cheaper to purchase, donation not required. If you don't mind sitting in the upper deck, it's an affordable option. I park at Hobby Lobby and walk to the stadium so I save money on parking. :)

On the pod Blum said 500 tickets left. CW said he heard earlier that 58k were sold, but that his info could be wrong. Quick manual count on ticketmaster shows 233 tickets left. So there definitely are not ~3,500 tickets left.

At this point, a few hundred more tickets is just for the novelty of getting to say it's an official sell out. It'll be a packed house.

I don't think the disappointment would be at the individual level. There are plenty of reasons for individuals to justify not attending. The disappointment would come from the belief that our fanbase as a whole is large enough and passionate enough to sell out games when we finally seem to have a really good team.

That said, we are basically there so much ado about nothing. Should be an amazing atmosphere Saturday.

I mean, I pay less money to go to 41 home NHL games than I would to sit at the 50 yard line in the upper deck for 7 games. Hmmm, wonder why season tickets aren't selling out. I guess we just need some rich dude to buy the last tickets every week so we can have some fake sellout streak like Nebraska
