Certainly have a lot of respect for the USA gymnasts, great to see them win gold as they are supremely talented and deserving.

That being said, the hype machine is making following them not as much fun. Parents are now starring in commercials for big Pharma?? That weird show where they announced the team.

Not hating on them, go get yours while you can, but it does make me less interested if I'm being honest.

Its giving Caitlin Clark vibes.

I can kind of see this.

But man, do I love Simone. Very rarely do we get to watch someone as good as she is at their sport. So I'm enjoying it while I can.

For that long too.

There are exceptions like Tom Brady that are elite for a long duration but it seems most athletes' dominant phase is 2-4 years.

Imagine what she would have done if she hadn't gotten the twisties in Tokyo, although she probably would have retired from competitive gymnastics if she had won gold again there.

Need Hali and Tatum today! Sometimes ‘genius’ coaches outthink themselves. Pacers were not a great defensive team but Hali can hold his own. And Tatum was an NBA champion! That being said -go Shayok!

It seems like we're in a new era of womens gymnastics where to have the power required to do the bigger tricks you also need to be bigger/older

It wasn't that long ago that the soviets/chinese would regularly attempt to get 14 year olds qualifed by making up new papers showing them as 16 or that gymnasts in all countries intentionally trying to delay puberty.

Now that we seem to be in an era where it's women competing and not girls I think we'll see longer careers and longer peaks. It's not just Biles, the US brought back essentially the entire team from the last Olympics. That was essentially unheard of for an elite level program even 8 years ago.

That's what I've noticed as well. It was unheard of to have someone come back and be seriously competitive the next cycle. The fact that Simone had/has a chance to have been the individual all around champ THREE TIMES IN A ROW is amazing. And Suni, Andrade, others are there as well. Hezly at 16 should have been the star and instead they're talking about next time for her. Shannon Miller repeated in the 90s but for anyone to seriously do that, they had to hit the age bracket just right and be 15/16 the first time so they're maxing out at 20 a second time. When Ali and Gabby came back for a second, that was the indication of a real shift for me. Figure skating has traditionally been very similar and I wonder if any of this will transfer over there as well.

Biles is great but she is also 4’8” and that seems to be an advantage in women’s gymnastics. Part of the reason for the minimum age. There is a move to make it 18 like the men.

Anyone else too stupid to understand the gymnastics leaderboards? I have to always just rely on the context the guys announcing are telling me.
