Collegiate Duals Mon 12/18

Nope. Already considering him questionable for Jan 5th? That to me means he’s almost assuredly out for that one and that’s just a nice way to ease into it.

Must be fairly serious. Giving me flashbacks to last year. Good start to the season, then injury. Then significant struggles.
Well blame it on your boy Redding. And it was a pretty benign procedure. He should be fine vs cal baptist

If you want to have a non revenue sport and be competitive, you need the collective. Wrestling runs off of 9.9 scholarships for 40 guys. Football has 85 scholarship and Basketball, 15???.

NIL is more important to a wrestling student-athlete because they are doing this for little or no scholarship.

If we want to compete for a team trophy, we need NIL. Michigan and Iowa are spending lots of dollars on NIL athletes. I have to think PSU is spending more than they say, although the coach helps.

I don't want to watch a team the is doing the minimum and have a couple hundred fans at a meet. Those programs could easily be on the chopping block.

I wish we didn't have NIL, but we do. I wish we had 20 plus scholarships, but we don't
I appreciate your honesty and the stats you gave. That's what I was asking for, but @Tigerguy_ wants to not give them.

Ultimately,, I may be wrong, but I think if wrestlers from the tops teams are asked why they went there they will say it is due to coaching/facilities. As mentioned I may be wrong.

However, it is proven daily that schools are buying their teams. I.e. #1 QB in the nation going to Nebraska. Guys like Nick Saban and others complaining about NIL cause they know their schools can't keep up. I honestly hate it, and am sorry for ruffling feathers as that was not my intention. I most likely misspoke and do sincerely apologize

Pre NIL, that might have been the case. But some of these guys (especially at smaller programs that may not even have 9.9 scholarships) are going for little athlete $$$. Then when they have success, the big programs come knocking with enough $$$ that cover a full scholarship & money left over.

Olejnik from Northern Ill to Ok State
Truax from Cal Poly to PSU
Messenbrink from Cal Baptist to PSU
Caleb Smith from App State to Nebraska

Maybe you should do the same! My earlier statement was in regards to money and the sports in which bring in money to help fund these athletic departments. I.e. football, basketball, etc

My take with NIL is that there are a lot of sports fans who truly don't understand the beast that wrestling NIL is. Everyone knows that FB and MBB are the top of the food chain. We know that they are the reason athletic departments exist because of their revenue and we see their NIL deals all over the news. However, wrestling is a lot more under the radar. It's not as flashy as say us reading about some team in Utah getting trucks or something. That's just a random example. There is WAY more money and chaos in wrestling NIL than I think people realize. I think people underestimate the sport just because it's viewed as a "smaller" sport. Not saying that's what you're saying!

Sure, guys are still choosing colleges that fit them best in terms of culture, coaching, and facilities but wrestlers are still going where money talks. This summer alone there were tons of guys moving schools and we knew it wasn't to chase a better culture. I know of wrestlers making more than football starters.

They can't run me off that easy. Honestly it is amazing to see the shear number of ISU wrestling fans. I appreciate the back and forth, and know this team is in good hands with the coaches and fans.

Sorry for all the frustrations today!
It's like sticking your hand in a tiger (lol) cage when you get wrestling fans riled up.

Wonder how UNI will do today. I'll be tuned into them against OSU where they are a 17 dog to them according to Circa. They are also a 22 dog to NCST.
OSU is a 8 dog to NC State.

I think what you pointed out at the beginning is what he was getting at. That FB and MBB carry every other sport in the AD. If FB is doing well, it frees up more money for things like, better coaching pay, a new practice facility, entering better meets and things like that.

Unless you are very in tune with ISU wrestling, there is a good chance you have no idea about the cardinal and gold collective. With We Will, donors can feel more connected to the sport of their preference by getting town hall zoom meetings and interviews with coaches and athletes that aren’t available to the general public. Those type of benefits can help the team by getting cash to the wrestler and forming a tighter connection to the sport.

I think we can all agree
NIL is here to stay,
In some ways having athletes compensated is long overdue -
In others its damaging college athletics -
system like most needs to put under a microscope and reworked.
as I have said before it is currently the wild west

really have no answers,
you can't blame a young man or woman for taking a deal or deals that financially will benefit them for years after college has ended. but when you hear that some will lose money heading into the draft of said sport or considering a Rolls Royce - it's time for some checks and balances to be put in place

I believe just like scholarships (9.9 for wrestling was stated ) - the # of $'s one can earn needs to be capped

For reference to the C&G collective and how big NIL money is in wrestling....I believe it's fairly well known to those who pay attention and ask questions that DC was offered $300k to leave Ames.

My point being that these kids ain't leaving their schools for "better facilities/coaches/etc"

Why would you even deal with that? Why wouldn’t you just give directly to the cardinal and gold if you wanted to support wrestling?
I hadn't thought about until just now, but We Will is an approved charity on Benevity, which some companies use for donation matching. Last I checked (just a few weeks ago) C&G is not. So that may be a motivation to "funnel" money through WW.

One other thing, and I am not saying this to piss a bunch of you off as I truly love wrestling (heck I started wrestling when I was 5 years old), BUT it has to be understood that Football and Men's bball bring in the revenue that allows us to have other sports. Is it unfortunate, YES, but it is reality. This is another reason I donate to the We Will, because I do feel they will give the funds to those that need it the most. I honestly feel the likes of wrestling will be able to keep athletes here easier because of our coaching staff, facilities, etc. compared to other wrestling teams. How many wrestlers do you see going to Penn State because of the money? I feel a majority go there because of the coach. Same goes with ISU. I feel that Dresser, DSJ and Metcalf have done, and will continue to, do an amazing job at recruiting and getting our wrestlers ready to compete.

Penn State does plenty with money

Sounds like a lot to most of us but I wouldn't sell the legacy he build for that.
