Random Thoughts 17: Here we go again.

Donated blood this morning and then got a Starbucks coffee. Has become kind of a tradition -- reward for losing some fluid is to drink some fluid.
While in the check-in-mini physical room I watched a spider crawl up one wall and then back down. When it crawled back up and started toward the next wall, I called attention to it. The gal working with me apparently does not like spiders. It was fun.

Model 97 corn sheller!! I have one that was my grandfather's. I always thought it was cool as a kid that you could keep the trigger pulled and just pump the slide to keep shooting. Not the most accurate, but interesting. Most pumps don't roll like that.
At the right range accuracy doesn't matter; all that matters is the volume of lead you can pump in a hurry.

I haven't ridden my bike any significant distance since RAGBRAI. I am not counting the 3 miles to and 3 miles back for tailgating on Saturdays.

This week my neighbor texted me and said that he was drafted into being the lead biker for our sons' home cross country meet. He asked me to split the races with him because he was concerned about keeping ahead of the varsity runners after so many races back to back. I had signed up as a course marshal but I said I would do it.

I had never been at this meet since it is son's first year. It is a huge meet with over 20 teams competing. It is in a park here and it is on a hilly course through the woods on grass, gravel and dirt (which is muddy after this week's rain). I led the boy's B squad, JV and varsity races. He led the girl's JV, varsity and coed middle school races. We also helped out the sweeper biker since they only had one and he was generally not to the finish line before the next race started.

I'll just say these boys are damned good runners. I was struggling a bit by the varsity race to stay ahead of the lead two runners on some of the climbs on my mountain bike. You have to stay in view so you are braking on the downhills to stay in contact and then climbing like mad on the uphills.

It ended up being just 20 kilometers of mountain biking but I was feeling it. I'll just say, I'm getting fat.

Mo' rain. Started at 5 and just mostly stopped.

Weird to have it rain steady for hours several times in the last week after several years of drought. Of course they were supposed to replace a bad shingle on the roof today.

So Liam Neeson is in the most recent (and final) season of Derry Girls and is really good.

Also, a plug for Derry Girls (a show on Netflix about a group of kids growing up during the troubles): it is really good and really funny

Another 1.5" at the Velo homestead. That puts us up near 7" in about a week. I can say with certainty that we didn't get that much in all of summer leading up to that point.

I get coats, hats, rain gauges, gift certs, hams, meat, coolers, passes to events, and many other appreciated things, but this is the first time I’ve received a pie. I like that better than the other things.
