Unfortunately that's all part of it. There are plenty of good coaches who have lost momentum and lost programs. Sometimes bad luck and timing kills coaches.
And the KEY question is: did their replacements fare any better? For that matter, how many replacements have done better vs done worse? I think people underestimate the difficulty of hiring even a mediocre coach. CMC has taken a flailing program to the point where every team takes them seriously now. So, this "I want it now" and "I want it all the time" thinking, IMO, is destined for failure.

Here is athletic revenue by schools. Looking at the Hateful 8, our $111M is behind KU but ahead of WVU, TT, OSU, and KSU. Honestly all those schools are pretty close.

We are all ahead of the new adds UCF, Houston, and Cincy.

Going forward, CU looks to be behind us. UA, ASU, and Utah look to be a bit ahead, about the same level as KU.

I would say we are probably top half of the new league for AD revenue. I believe we also have the second largest stadium now just a couple thousand behind BYU. This is a far cry from our place in the B12 of 20 years ago.
Barry Switzer would openly criticize the poor state of ISU FB facilities in the press. Fun times under Gordo.

There is an unbelievable amount of dumb in this thread.

The OP vanity posted this thread after he'd posted a similar one the week before. So I have no problem with people trolling them in here after a win. But yeah, the people who stay bitter and try to post through it after the wins are dumb.

He wasn't wrong.

JP single handedly transformed ISU athletics to make it competitive across the board. Smith, VDV were only working around the edges by comparison. I don't know what the future holds in terms of media financing of the program, but the past fifteen plus years has been managed about as well as it could have been.

Somehow I’m guessing that you and JoeFrog would still be throwing a tantrum if we exceed 5-7 this year.
I would love it if we get at least 6 wins this year.

The players and fans deserve it.

Sadly, Campbell doesn't really get going until conference season starts, so we already missed two of the easiest opportunities.

I must have missed the other Big 12 championship we played in. Or the other Fiesta Bowl we won. Or the other trips to San Antonio or Orlando for bowl games. I mean i know you have a vendetta against him but I don’t think it’s even a question that he is the best coach in ISU history and I’ve been attending since 1985.
Beating undermanned conference foes, losing to Spencer Rattler, and beating a 4 and 3 Oregon team? With alll sorts of high level NFL talent? Wow! Much win!

McCarney was lb for lb the best recruiting head coach we've had since I've been alive(1980). His first staff was really good. He outrecruited what we had for football infrastructure for sure.

Danny Mac made all of his hay on a weak a$$ schedule and thats not even up for debate. Outside of the Iowa game he got blown out in every single big game Iowa State played in.

TBF, OP was positive after the win on here, and it might be done in a style that feels like trolling, but I think this thread raised an interesting discussion.

It seems crazy to many that Campbell would be on the hot seat. Yet there were absolutely times when it would've seemed absurd that McCarney and Rhoads would've been forced out. Is this a bump in the road and Campbell course-corrects, or is this the early stages of what ultimately McCarney and Rhoads faced after periods of positivity and success at different levels?

And sometimes schools have really good coaches, the best or one of the best the school has had and it runs its course and it's time to move on. It happens. For the record, I think Campbell has done the best job at ISU that any coach has done. Fans get too biased for eras or specific coaches. I look to what people outside the program think and look at accolades. People outside of ISU thought Campbell did the best job in the league multiple times.

I believe in this staff and I think they might be able to correct, salvage this year and have a nice year next year. But my confidence is a lot less than it was a couple years ago.

In 7 seasons at ISU, I believe Campbell has been voted Big 12 coach of the year 3 times. Enough said.

A coach should never be judged by one win or one loss. However, the momentum of the program since the Fiesta bowl win has been downward. Check out Coach Campbell's record since then. It has not been good!

And if we didn't count our D's and F's, we'd all be on the honor roll, right?

There are really only two options. It’s Major or it’s Bruce.

Majors finished with a losing record his last year before leaving for Pitt. That team had the highest NFL Draft Pick ever from Iowa State.

Neither Majors nor Bruce won Conference Coach of the Year while at Iowa State. Both achieved their greatest success after leaving Iowa State. Campbell has been Big 12 Coach of the Year 3 times while at Iowa State.

His success has been held back by those in charge of the offense and ST.

Just imagine if we had the coaching to be good on ST and slightly better on offense- we would have won a majority of those close losses.

Apples to oranges.

Would Matt Campbell have been able to field a team that could beat Tom Osborne and Barry Switzer back when there were no scholarship limits and the only schools "allowed" to pay players were the Nebraska's and Oklahoma's?

With his recent statements on how hard it is to win at ISU, and that winning the conference isn't the goal.......I have my doubts. You would never hear either of coaches say that. They had the LE attitude of "why not here".

I think early in his tenure at ISU Matt had a little of that himself. Something has changed. Hopefully he can get that mojo back because trying to be Kirk Ferentz isn't a good look.
