I had a few conversations with some old time cyclones at a couple of Iowa game tailgates last weekend. I knew some people were not happy about cytown but I was surprised to find multiple people that are downright pissed the hell off about it.

Iowans, even the relatively young ones, generally have the attitude of stodgy old grumps when it comes to any kind of change. Once it's done and everyone realizes the world will continue spinning they'll get over it.

I'm guessing many of them don't know half the details of the plan.

Like this guy...

I find it curious that all of a sudden everywhere that there are football or baseball stadiums is suddenly a move to develop an entertainment center adjacent (in this case entertainment and medical). Someone must have held a conference somewhere that featured this idea two, three, or four years ago.

The KU football field redevelopment plan will take all of the existing adjoining parking lots to create theirs. The remaining parking will be reserved to the new businesses. They have no plan for replacing game day parking.

The new KC Royals owner wants this on a new site in downtown KC so he can own, control, and profit from all surrounding restaurant and tavern development.

The problem with all of them, including the ISU plan, is that they will take all or a large portion of the close-in parking. How far away will our basketball fans and concert attendees have to walk in the cold snow in January? How many of the adjacent parking spaces will be reserved to the businesses and not accessible during games? Will ISU have to build a parking ramp near the Concert, BB, or FB stadiums and how much will that cost? Will fans/patrons have to walk from the campus parking ramp to games and concerts?

I only have one word: Stupid. State Universities do not need to develop every square inch so they can make profits for developers. What is next, a Menards and Wataburger next to the Campanile on central campus?

Did you read the plan to answer your questions yet? Or you just gonna keep yelling at the clouds?

My guess is most people that are "pissed" are upset about parking changes and chalking it all up to CyTown.

Or we could go for a field of dreams vibe. Plant some corn between building and stadium and have Player Walk through a field of corn!!! The national media will love it. It will put the Iowa Wave to shame.
I actually like the field of dreams idea. I mean, we don't have a baseball team, but why the heck not? It's very Iowa, very ag, lean into it. Lots of good marketing opps there.

And I'd bet $1 that one of the seed companies would throw much more than $1 to sponsor it.

I am not an expert on this, I haven’t worked for the clinic in over a year - but I would guess this won’t be. The South University location is equidistant to 30, and has fam med, lab, optometry, etc. Unless the play here is to replace Student Death, I would think this is more likely sports-related. It would certainly make sense for Sports Medicine and all athletic physicals to move here.
I LOVE that even over 30 years since I was in school, it is still called "Student Death" and that EVERY ALUMNI calls it "Student Death" EVERY TIME they mention it.

Hey. We used to play football in the vacant parking lot that the practice facility is on.

I'm hella pissed! How dare the university make upgrades to compete in big time athletics.

On this week's Coach's Corner Jamie said two things about the importance of the McFarland Clinic project. 1) it's contract alone will fund the cost of the infrastructure improvements currently under construction. They had no 0other way to fund the repaying of the lots. And 2) the clinic will see 800 patients per day. That's 800 people drawn to the site daily!
For example: The Hobby Lobby on Jordan Creek in West Des Moines has averaged 968.3 people per day in 2023 (thru August 31)

BUT WE HAVE HALF THE PARKING WE USED TO!!! THANKS JAMIE!!!!!
I haven't attended an ISU sporting event in person since 2019/20 school year when I had season tickets and parking pass between Hilton & JT. So I haven't experienced the parking changes.

During my time as a season ticket holder (2007-2020) I think our fans had one of the best parking setups in the country for football & hoops. So it's natural to be critical of any changes, because any change was/is going to diminish the close proximity of parking to events.

But as long as the Athletic Department is finding new parking areas, they are meeting fans needs. Maybe the AD will need to provide shuttle services or promote on campus options. Heck, I parked at MU ramp when I was arriving close to game time to avoid traffic around Hilton or JT. A 10-15 walk isn't a big deal for most. And sometimes it makes leaving after the event quicker.

He did not say that McFarland was the only way to pay for the parking lots. What he did say is that Cytown was their only clear option to pay for it. Said that it had been needed since he first became AD but there was no way to pay for it - state of Iowa won't help.

5-6 years ago, the price tag to redo all of the ISC lots was around $20M. Not exactly couch cushion money.
