It's time for a career change, partly because I want/need to, partly because I might be forced to soon. I was starting to look for something else last fall, when my boss went to the doctor at the end of September because he was a little fatigued and noticed his color was off. Doctor told him to get to the hospital immediately. They did a scan and found a mass on his liver. Got sent to UW, biopsy, came back cancerous, and was told he had 3 weeks because chemo wasn't possible unless his bilirubin came down. It was 12 when it should be 1 or less.
So my boss's son immediately took over the business, which was the eventual plan, just not this soon. I elected to stick around, but I never specified how long. Boss's bilirubin level came down enough to start chemo in October. He was in and out of the hospital with infections so it took way longer to do. The chemo didn't end up being effective so they tried radiation at the beginning of April.
He went back up to UW this past weekend to see if it had worked and it didn't, and there's nothing more than can be done. He could live 6 months, or it could be 6 days. Doctor said he won't suffer.
So it's just been his son and I since last fall. We've got back into a rhythm now of doing trees the last few months, but it's getting to be more than I can handle. I don't want to leave because I don't want to leave him hanging, been there 11 years, but it's just not cutting it anymore and I got to do what's best for me. The future of the business is up in the air at this point, he wants to continue because it's all he's ever done.
In addition to all this, his son's wife gave birth to their first in January, and then his MIL passed away, so the family has been on a roller coaster for 8 months.
I know I need to talk to him sooner rather than later about needing to find something else, and I almost did it today, but he was too emotional and I'm just worried about sending him over the edge.

'Joliet, Illinois - Temporary Home of Jake and Elwood Blues'Joliet's not that bad.
Surf having a 75th anniversary concert and they are charging $7.50 for tickets. Heard it from Mrs. Velo's aunt and uncle who are going. I think they said the act was REO Speedwagon. No, that is what those barn places charge. Just for the location. They soak people. You can rent the Surf (last place buddy holly played and can hold 2500) for about half that or less.

That's very thoughtful of you. However, you do need to do what's best for you. Be sure to give them a good timeline for your departure. Who knows, they may offer you something that you don't expect. It's time for a career change, partly because I want/need to, partly because I might be forced to soon. There used to be one a couple of blocks from our house that had a restaurant associated with it. The couple that owned it had a falling out and they aired out all of their grievances on our community Facebook page.
Stuck in an hour meeting this morning that's a quarterly update from one of our partners. Essentially its an hour of excuses of why stuff isn't done yet. I'm having a hard time hiding my facial expressions of disgust on Zoom.
How long would you be willing to stay to see if things smooth out a bit?
Any ideas on what else you'd like to do?
It can be a tough deal...good on ya for thinking of others but as is best in many cases, you have to do what's best for you.
I want to get my CDL and do OTR for a while. It's something completely different and a little easier on my body. I liked the carpentry work I was doing, and I wouldn't mind doing that full time, but not right now.Do you want to change jobs or is there a path forward to make you a more integrated part of the business?

It's a small group of us, 8 total. If I camera off, they know I'm definitely not paying attention. Counterpoint: If they want me to pay attention, they should bring me actual updates instead of excuses.I always camera off when I'm on zoom meetings.
I think this explains why Grandpa in the three generation Asian household across the street spends so much time working on the ornamental plantings.Hangin' in Iowa for awhile. It may kill me.
Edit: It's all an intricate and well crafted conspiracy based on my low level of kid exposure and tolerance. Just got through cleaning the Levolor kitchen curtains to keep myself busy and untormented. Make lots of noise and act crazy and maybe Uncle Boxster will go try and find a distraction/escape. Off to prune the big winged euonymus outside.![]()
You should just always use a RBF so they never have a clue what you're thinking.Stuck in an hour meeting this morning that's a quarterly update from one of our partners.
