As far as I can tell you cannot just do it on your own it is only when they offer it for events like you mentioned.
Right now it's only been for the Men's & Women's NCAA Tournament. I THINK by Fall the goal is to have it as a full-time service where you can pick whatever 4 channels you want to watch. Hopefully that function will be available for College Football Season.
I don't think that is true. To make it work with any equipment, they host the 4 channels on their own servers. If you want to be able to select 4 of your own, you'd have to have a device (TV or whatever), that could input 4 streams simultaneously.
I imagine for college football season, they'll host a lot of different 4 game options. Lets say games A through H are being played. They might have the following combinations.
ABCD
EFGH
ABGH
ABEF
ABCE
ABCF
etc.
The talk is Youtube wanted to offer a lower price and also offer like a team only package but NFL wouldn't allow them to do that due to their contracts with Fox & CBS.
Why can Apple TV (streaming device) and Fubo (streaming service) allow you to pick any 4 channels you want to now? Their technology that much different?

Even in this test run you could pick games/channels and how many. 2 ,3 4. Really it worked just like Fubo the only exception was YT didn't have the option to add a channel on every channel.
Fubo and Apple TV only work on Apple TV devices. Youtube TV is not device specific.
Could be a lot of reasons depending on how each one implements its multiview.
I havent used Fubo\Apple tv, but from what I can tell it is just limited to apple tv and can't be done on other devices like Roku. That tells me that they might be handling things client-side, which would mean having devices that can handle the additional power to combine those channels on their own into one feed. Apple tv is easier for them to do that than with Roku\Google tv because there are a wide range of devices and hardware capabilities on the latter but only a few apple tv devices (A Roku ultra could probably support it, but not one of the express devices, for example).
I think google is doing everything server-side right now, so essentially they're merging channels and broadcasting those out on their own. Easy enough to do when there are only a relative few possible combinations during the tournament, harder to do when you think about the number of 4 channel combinations you might have for several dozen channels. They could try to go the fubo route and limit it to just certain devices, but this could cause a lot of confusion and frustration among its customers who are on a wide range of devices. They talk about being able to choose the channels you want in the future, so I assume its just a question of figuring out a way to spin up those servers on demand to handle a much wider variety of channels

$249 if you sign up early, vs. $311-ish through Direct TV last year?
I mean, I’d love it to be less, but that doesn’t sound completely outrageous. What is that, like $13 a week to watch whatever games you want, instead of the Bears every Sunday here in eastern Iowa?
I’m thinking about it.
$250 feels like a bargain. Seems like I paid about that much for the NBA pass in the early 2000's.
Youtube TV is getting crushed on social media now. I can only imagine if this happened on a NFL Sunday.
Hopefully we will get some kind of refund or discount out of it but I doubt it.
Hulu froze at the end of a super close march madness game. The streamers are going to need to get their **** figured out for live sports.
