Iowa State Transfer/Recruiting Class 2023

Ish is a good dude with a solid outside game. However, he had trouble keeping up with his shadow on defense and didn't rebound at all.

I suspect coach Tang told him that he might be better placed in a different program. No way of knowing, but when Keyontae Johnson went out of the Florida Atlantic game, State's defense went wanting with Ish at the three.
That's complete BS.

there is ZERO chance - ABSOLUTELY ZERO - that any coach ever, at any level, tells a 6'8" player who shoots 43% from 3 that they need to move on. That didn't happen

Maybe. But the fact that a 43% shooter from 3 only averaged 15mpg over the season speaks volumes what the coach thinks. Especially when the player is 6'8".

He might not have got run-off, but doubt Tang viewed him as a cornerstone of next year's team. My guess is he would have only played 15mpg next year as well.

Ish Massoud is why I absolutely love the transfer portal/NIL.

That FDU coach waited all of 12 hrs to bolt for Iona, Pitino happily got out of there to go to St John's. Some coach I've never heard of left VCU to get $25M from Penn State.

And so a 6'8" stud who drains 3's can't find a better option and make some serious cash?? GOOD for him.

Massoud playing only 15 minutes a game was poor coaching by Tang. He was the one guy for KSU who really concerned me. He could absolutely shoot it.

He only played 15 minutes a game as that was all he could do. Despite getting some uncharestic steals in the E8 game, be was a terrible defender, terrible rebounder and we all saw what happens when he put the ball on the floor.

If he wasn't getting shooting volume or was having an off night he was useless. But the ONE skill was a hell of a skill, and when he was on and wasn't exposed on his deficiencies he could win some games.

He was basically KSUs version of Bob. Instead of an effective quick lane hook Ish could bomb 3s, which was infinitely more valuable.

Sometimes being the smartest or best coach flat out doesn't matter. You could draw up the best play and your guys simply don't execute it correctly OR the defense does something that couldn't be accounted for prior, and all of a sudden everything goes out the window. It all then falls on having the right guys on the floor at the right time that you trust to make the play when something breaks down.

It is so so easy to play the if, and, or, buts game after the fact.

I agree with the last statement but I was befuddled, in real time, and that was regardless of the result. KSU made several threes where I was like "that was a terrible shot". The assessment is really about "is that the best possible way to give us the highest likelihood of achieving an outcome?". There are plenty of times where a coach draws up a perfect play and the shot is missed or a player makes a mistake. Those plays clearly looked like a lapse of judgment. There was no feasible likelihood FAU wouldn't foul as it easily created the highest likelihood to win. The fact that they didn't doesn't mean that KSU could have assumed as much.

If you are able to get the right player...a Nowell or a Massoud an in rhythm open look, you tell them to take it 100% of the time. Going for 2 was not only stupid, they took way to long to even give it a chance of working.

It was bad coaching. No other way to slice it.

I think calling it bad coaching is a little over the top. There are a finite amount of options in that scenario and what Tang told them to do or what his team did didn’t work out. I mostly disagreed with you saying Tang wasn’t a good X’s and O’s coach based off one scenario.

Yep, loyalty is just a word that's easy to use.

The Penn State coach who could have been revolutionary there jumped too.

It's crazy that ZRF finds a way to so many practices and meetings and huddles to know how it all goes.

FFS you are insufferable.

Iowa State in 2022/23 would have LOVED Ish Massoud.. Especially before Tre King became eligible

Lipsey
Gabe - 35%
Holmes - 33%
Massoud - 42%
Jaz - 35%

A pass first PG and 4 shooters. 3/5 are great defenders too. Could have opened the lane too for Lipsey layups

The other part of having an elite 3 point shooter is the rest of the guys % improves as well because they no longer have to force anything and get more open opportunities. Hopefully we can add the SG that does the same for us next season.

We could have used Massoud's shooting, but that would have been less minutes for Jaz. On offense they are basically the same style player with Massoud being a better shot, but Jaz is a better defender.

Everything I've seen from TJ is he likes a low post defender- either a shot blocker like Osun or Hasan or a physical guy like Jones. Look back at TJ's time at UNLV or look forward with his recruitment of Rock.

Alright well, it's been a while, but here's a quick little portal update on some of the names we're connected to

Idan Tretout - Not much here outside of someone with On3 saying he had a zoom call/meeting with Loyola Chicago

Nick Timberlake - A lot of questionable info on him. Seems like a UNC visit may have happened and I saw a tweet saying he committed that wasn't picked up anywhere.

Jace Carter - Nothing here, just wanted to mention that some ******* how I saw someone's drawing of a Pokemon with an extremely large butt when searching his name on Twitter. What the actual ****

John Hugley - Had an official visit to Georgia Tech that wrapped up a few days ago

Kowancie Reeves - Took visits to GT and BC, had an in home with Mississippi State

Clarence Daniels had a number of visits and a zoom meeting

Jamison Battle - In home with Indiana

Damian Dunn visited NC State

Dayvion McKnight is reportedly setting up visits with Arky, Xavier, and NC State. IDK if there's a limit for transfers or not

Knect, Bamba, and Menifield I didn't check due to how recent their news was

Nobody bumped off the list, but a few close.

100%

I'm sure the Synergy report would show Gabe's 3% being much higher when this was the lineup

Lipsey
Grill
Gabe
Holmes
Osun

Versus

Gabe
Holmes
Watson
King
