For the resources, they underachieve sure. The Shaka hire was mind boggling, and Barnes was kind of the mirror of Mack Brown. It had gotten a little stale, and both of them are having success else where.
I just don't think they're a "terrible program."
Terrible was Baylor until they hired the right coach, and a coach that many, including me, laughed at. Not sure if Beard is the right coach there yet, but I think he can be.
He’s a good college player but the only way he makes the NBA at his height is if he turns into a prolific scoring machine & I don’t see that happening. Any NBA coach would isolate and post him up with the bigger physical NBA guards and eat him alive. He made a good decision to follow the money while he could. And get used to UT in the limelight, Beard is a very good coach/recruiter & UT has unreal money at his disposal.
The finishing at the rim part is what I'm not so sure about. As a point guard yes, but his handle isn't very strong.
He can be a backup point guard like Jordan McLaughlin. It would be pretty tough though.
Texas does less with more than any AD in the country. And with their arrogant big cigars it'll never change. They're a lot like Nebraska fans in that they think the universe owes them because they're Texas. And in Texas's case, they're rich.
Iowa State has had much more success recently than Texas, both in the Big 12 and the NCAA tournament.
I stand by my statement, I don't care who their coach is, it's still a step down from Iowa State, and absolutely bottom of the barrel compared to other schools he could have chosen instead.
OK, lets use your Sweet 16 argument. ISU has been to more NCAA tourneys and Sweet 16's than Indiana, Louisville has in the last 8 years. Are Indiana and Louisville also "terrible programs?"
And with your rationale, why would a player choose ISU over KU, Mich St, UCLA then? Like a Biliew, Momcilovic, etc...
Yeah, pretty much, I think Louisville is 0-3 right now and Indiana got blown out in the first round last year after making the tourney for the first time in like 5 years.
I see what you are doing though. If you want to talk long term, at least since I've been alive, Texas is nowhere near the same level of a program as either Lousiville or Indiana. What have they done besides produce Kevin Durant in the last 40 years?

A Final Four, Four Elite Eights, Seven Sweet 16's, and more NCAA tournaments than ISU has ever had.
But explain why. If you don't get why Hunter would turn down KU or Gonzaga, why are players doing the same to come to ISU?

Who cares what happneed in the SWC in the 80s. The last 10-15 years Iowa State is a much better program and it's not even debatable. How many Big 12 tourney championships have they won?
I remember years and years of them having 3,000 parents and people who got free corporate tickets attending the games while we had the best home court environment in the country.
Even last year, we beat them head to head and went further in the tourney.

It's pretty obvious he choose them because of money, yet you are trying to defend him by saying it's because of Texas and their storied John Wooden like legacy.
Never been to Texas and never will. I've spent a half day at the airport in Houston and that was enough of Texas for me.
