That was the school! some googling tells me it went elementary-only until '78 but served k-12 until the mid-50s, when the older students merged into Winfield-Mt Union
Yep, the old school -- referred to as the "Wyman Warehouse" afterwards. Got some clothes from there around '90 back when it was clothing store when I was a kid. Looks like it closed in '99. Doesn't appear to be in very good shape per that picture, and that's likely a few years old. :(

You need to take a trip to Ottumwa if you think meth heads only live in government controlled housing. Parts of Ottumwa look like a third world country.
Third world country, how often do you get to Ottumwa? Like any river town it has its poor areas, but its nothing compared to a third world country. The Northern part around IHCC is not bad at all, in fact most of the town North of the river is fine. Now if you are comparing it to Ankeny, W. Des Moines and places like that, it just doesn't stand up, but if you want to see poor towns, try hitting up Decator and much of Wayne counties, they will make Ottumwa look like a rather nice town to live in.

Sounds a lot like some towns my Dad would tell me about in/around the area where I'm from. Fern, Sinclair, Fredsville, Marietta. There is not shortage when you start looking into the history.
I love that someone else on here knows those towns. Stout is still alive and thriving. Play slow pitch at the Stout Astrodome every summer

I hear some on here complaining about rural Iowa, but it makes me wonder how much these people have been to rural areas in other States. Iowa rural communities look high dollar compared to a lot of them around the country. And you do not have to go that far out of Iowa to see those that are much worse.

The Dakotas, Appalachians, South, Southwest, all have rural and small towns that look much much worse than any in Iowa, and it really is not even close. Cities around the country have a lot of rat holes too.

I like to get off the interstate and take the less traveled roads on trips and you will really see how much worse off some areas are. There are some really poor areas around, the country, and Iowa is not really close to as poor as some.

There are areas of this country that are absolutely destitute. Driving across New Mexico, the poverty of native Americans and others is heartbreaking.

Bashing rural Iowans seems the accepted norm here. Not sure why. Some strange superiority complex. There are bad areas in most towns, as well as good ones.

I've been through quite a few states and I think the most inbred knuckledragging place I've ever been is rural Washington. You wouldn't believe some of moss covered shacks people live in 40 minutes from Seattle. Down on like Key Peninsula.
