Another Manning S^*T sandwich

As far as the WRs getting separation, I think they get plenty. X isnt a blazer he just runs good routes and hes doing it generally against the best DBs.

This is mostly on Dekkers. He needs to put the ball on the WRs when they come out of their break. He isnt and it allows the DBs to recover and it looks like the WRs have been blanketed the whole time. The timing needs to be better between Dekkers and the WRs and its just not.

I don't think I'm crazy in thinking this, but could we see a different QB on Saturday if Dekkers struggles out of the gate? In 2018, Campbell benched semi-effective but non-dynamic starter Zeb Noland in favor of Brock Purdy, who the defense (Oklahoma State) was completely unready for. It resulted in free-flowing offense that stunned their opponent. Kempt was similar the year before, but that was more out of necessity with Park suddenly leaving and Noland not being ready. I'm not rooting for Dekkers to fail by any means, but if we need to get another guy out there who might see the field a little differently (and maybe doesn't see ghosts) I hope Campbell does it. With the season kind of on the brink right now, I think we could see it as soon as this Saturday.

Im so mixed about switching QBs. I go back and forth. While you would like Dekkers to sit a series or two to take a deep breath and watch what is going on with the defense Im not sure it matters. He has to see the game film and his errors and correct them. The coaches have no doubt shown him so why hasnt timing and reading defenses progressed? Im guessing the cannon that Dekkers possesses has always gotten him out of trouble no matter what the defense did. He needs to use his mind more now than his ability.

The other thing, if you switch QBs and the "other" guy has success can you switch back? Are the coaches ready to have a QB transfer if the backup has success and either stays as the QB or gets replaced the following week again.

It is a tough call, no doubt. I agree, you don't want to create a situation where Hunter gets pissed and leaves. If that does happen though, perhaps you have solved the issues at the QB position. If not, and Cook or possibly Becht come in and do just as bad or worse, then I imagine Hunter sticks around and we have a QB battle in fall camp next year between Hunter, the other incumbents and Kohl.

Benching Dekkers won't solve the broader issue our coaches have of stifling our QBs.

Every single QB in the Campbell era had their best passer rating in their first career start.

Our coaches see our QBs win with incredible efficiency and then snap a governor on their wrist and ankle so they can't do anything outside of the system for the next 4 years.

I don't think Dekkers is the john Elway everyone thought he was going to be. But I also don't think anybody behind him is better. The other two didn't really light it up on the non-con

Our coaches worry so much about ball control, and don't play a turnover forcing defense, so they must really do a number on the QBs about making safe throws.

The result is declining quality of QB play the longer they are in the system.

Apparently Deckers didn't get that memo

I cant really speak to the other QBs in the Campbell era as I dont recall their first starts and havent looked up the stats but this is very true with Dekkers. In the first game this year they came out guns a blazin' and really turned him loose. I know Campbell doesnt like to pour it on teams and bury them but the second half of that SEMO game was decidely different than the first and Dekkers hasnt looked the same since.

I looked it up a few weeks ago.

Kyle Kempt first career start: 236.3 Passer Rating

Brock Purdy first career start: 243.1 Passer Rating
Brock Purdy best career start: 243.1 Passer Rating

Hunter Dekkers first career start: 196.2 Passer Rating

Just peeked at Purdy's efficiency rating through 4 seasons, ouch.

I think it's time it needs to be said, our offensive linemen are really bad. Blame scheme, blocking, injuries, whatever, but they aren't getting it done at all. Teams have run all over defenses like Kansas and Oklahoma and yet we struggle to get 3ypc. A competent running game would ease some pressure off Dekkers.

You say that like it’s a bad thing or like special teams don’t matter
IMO a dedicated coach to ALL of special teams or current coaches coaching a particular segment doesn't matter. Practice only has a finite amount of time each day and that time is the same for special teams whether it is one coach or current coaches.

You’re right, field position definitely doesn’t matter. Who cares if we get punts blocked and kickoffs returned for considerable yards against us, giving the opponent a short field is always a good idea, right?

To my understanding the specialist get most of their work done before practice then they have a couple periods where they do special teams work throughout practice.

That’s like saying “Practice only has a finite amount of time each day and that time is the same for offense or defense whether it is one coach or current coaches.”

Yeah the specialists can work the entire practice but that is the long snappers, punters and kickers only.

The rest of the individuals on the special teams are busy practicing with their position groups with individual drills and team/scout team drills. So it's not like the ENTIRE Punt team is going to get more work just because there's a dedicated special teams coach.

Usually 2 special teams are focused on each day for a couple of periods each, then the rest of practice is individual and team/scout team time. Thursday and Friday all special teams will be walked through, but this is more mental preparation than physical.
