Matt Campbell postgame quote

...Thinking players and families can tune the negativity out is a little naive.
Here's a counter balance to the negativity: we had 3 losses to teams (now ranked in the Coaches' Top 25) by a total of 11 points. We are right there with those teams. Playing at Texas will be a big challenge, but I'm glad we played our last 3 games close going into it.

CMC is in a new spot, I think. He's changed the culture...which is entirely different from X's and O's, IMO. The new change is the football part of the change and that means he has to make some tough decisions with grown men who don't need to be told to be the best versions of themselves.

Speaking from experience, (albeit at a less exposed position) managing adults, some of whom are older than you...more experienced than you, can be difficult at first. Totally different to sit across from Manning and can him than it is to tell an 18 year old anything.

I would imagine CMC is spending some quality time reflecting on his words since these comments were made...and I'll bet Pollard will help him through some of this. He needs to...CMC is still young...he's no Sabin.

Love Campbell but a ****** MASSIVE attempt to redirect attention and blame for the past 2 weeks. Almost an FU to the fans that keep showing up.

This is really his first big test of adversity while in Ames and not a great way to start dealing with it.

Having said that, people will also way overreact to it.

Yeah I also think he's allowed to be human too...we forget that.

Watched part of the clip last night on the news and can’t say it came off as bad as the quote looks or sounds. Probably not something I would say but I’m the tv clip he was noting good things that he saw and then took ownership of the loss and said it was all on his shoulders.

Matt Campbell should have heard the things my construction job foreman said to me when I was an 18 year old on the crew and made a mistake.

Campbell had some underhanded comments last season about criticism of Brock Purdy. Something something “not very nice things about him.” He’s territorial about his guys. I’d take that over a guy like Dan Mullen or Brian Kelly who never waste an opportunity to throw their guys under the bus.

But! Don’t generalize the entire fanbase, especially one who has showed up time and time again for periods of mediocre football the past 15 years

Agree, protecting the players is a great thing for him to be doing. However, it's real easy to say "some people" rather than "our fanbase". If he had just changed those two words, this thread would be 1,000 posts talking about how great CMC is as a leader.

The correct play would have been to say nothing like that. He wouldn’t have to even think about if he keeps his mouth shut on that topic. Especially when most (or maybe even all) of this situation was probably generated online. Anyone can be anything online, and it’s easy to troll. Better to ignore it. He got trolled imo.

Fanbase needs to back off Campbell. Let Campbell sort it out and trust him. He built this program. He will fix it.

Here on CF I didn't see a single post that fried Jace. The posts i saw understood how he overcompensated on the 3rd kick.
I saw several. I'm sure there were even more on Twitter. Here is a sample from the game day thread.

"What's worse, the CF server or Jace Gilbert"
"Three missed field goals cost us the game....its time for a new kicker!!
"******* joke. He better not kick again. Special team embarrassment again"
"Pull his scholarship...tonight"
"Leave the loser in Lawrence"
"Gilbert is absolute trash"

That would have been very provocative and worth a response in 1954 lol.

Someone in this thread noted people harassing Gilbert on his phone. I am sure that had to be worse than keyboard warriors trashing him.

My brother lived in the Towers when Tom Goedjen missed the only extra point attempt he ever missed that would have beaten Nebraska instead of tying them. Back when he and I lived in Towers, that’s where they put the football team. He said the in person abuse hurled at Goedjen by fellow students was brutal.

You can't possibly not understand why there's a difference between being yelled at on your crew. And being ridiculed by strangers.

The guy stood up for his player, why wouldnt he? The people roasting campbell for this clearly never played a sport in their lives. Fans were absolutely roasting that kicker after the KU game. I think campbell made the right move and hopefully some fans wake up and realize this is still a rebuilding year.

He didn’t stand up for his player. He stood up and looked down on the “fan base”. Standing up for your player looks like this:

“Jace is our guy, we believe in him, he’s a great kicker. The team is behind him and the fans are going to see that and be right there with us going forward.”

What CMC did is what whining and scapegoating after two bad losses looks like.

Oh, yay! Back-to-back-to-back moral victories!

So were going to stop going to games? were going to question his loyalty? What? F**k the fans that went after an 18 yr old when in reality they should of questioned campbell. But if were going to sit here and question this man maybe we should try and remember what life was like before he got here.
