What's the problem with offense besides Tom Manning?

I think it's a youth and talent issue, QB good but young, RB's good but injured, OL looks to be average, WR, X is a beast after X, either young or not particularly fast or talented. TE's young. Not a huge Manning fan but if we are honest he doesn't have a ton to work with. Kickers young and average at best.

These were great watches, what struck me in particular vs Baylor was that the majority of their successful plays came from under center off play action.

They would start Shapen under center then play action one way and Shapen would roll out the opposite way to an open TE or WR coming across the formation. It is somewhat similar to what Iowa does with their TEs and under center play action roll outs. (I know Iowa hasn't had a ton of successful offensive plays recently but this is where they do find success at times lol)

We aren’t that far off from having a sufficient offense, we just need to figure something out near the goal line and obviously field goal kicking. Our defense is good enough that we don’t have to score 30+ to win. We do need to get more competent inside the opponent’s 20 yard line.

I think there would absolutely be some conversations as to why we couldn't crack 20 against Kansas, but not to the same extreme

the thing is, TOE offense can’t keep their D off the field, which is why we went 99 yards against them. Our O is way ahead of them and good enough to move the ball, just need to clean up some stuff in the opponent’s red zone. TOE can’t figure out how to get to the opponent’s side of the 50.

I think Tyler Moore should get more pt. Had a beautiful catch against Ohio in mop up duty, and looks like our best blocking TE. He seriously reminds me of Dylan Soehner. He could be an asset in the run game.

I agree, I think with Dean potentially being out with a hamstring that we do see some Tyler Moore this weekend. Be looking out for #82.

You can be a ball control offense and be efficient. The point is ISUs offense is not efficient. It is one of the worst P5 when you adjust for opponent.
I would have loved to grind out a good day on the ground vs KU, but instead ISU got out rushed by Tennessee Tech. Not sure if they had as many sacks as ISU, but when you are closer to Tennessee Tech than Houston, WVU and Duke in offensive efficiency vs a common opponent, that’s a problem.

It's 5 games in. The only game that is a true bummer is KU, we had no business losing that game.

They have 7 more games to figure some stuff out, and Campbell has proven to be very good at making adjustments in the season.

If we're still this bad at the end of the season we might have something to talk about. But as bad as the O Line has been, losing Brock in pass pro has been a major issue.

We have every chance to win this game Saturday and I hope we have an awesome crowd to support these guys.

Dekkers is in, what, his 3rd year in Ames? That isn't young. Some people graduate college in 3 full years.

If there isn't much to work with, why wasn't more attention given to the transfer portal?

We're down to our 3rd and 4th string RB's. Is the offense not good? You bet, it's pretty dang frustrating to watch right now. But I'm not willing to throw the baby out with the bathwater considering what we've seen under Campbell's offensive staff.

Understandable but there have always been warning signs with the offense - no knock on Brock or the TE's but I honestly think the offense was the way it was for 2-3 years mostly because of David and Breece. David with his ability to just tell defenders "get off me" and Breece's ability to run into a brick wall 9 times and then on the 10th he's out for an 70 yard touchdown run.

Also on the offensive line - we haven't had a "nasty" player in a while. I can't remember if it was Good-Jones but a few years back Campbell and Myers were all over an offensive linemen for getting a personal foul after the play because he took a shot at a defender - while I"m never going to promote taking cheap shots, we don't have that mean streak it doesn't seem in an offensive linemen.


Last year I talked about how we lacked answers when teams blitzed and stacked the box - I thought it was because Brock didn't the biggest arm in the world and we lacked a down field threat. Well, now we have a bigger armed QB and a deep threat, at least one (Stanely) and yet we still don't have answers for teams who blitz a lot and stack the box so clearly, that short coming was more of a scheme.

Honestly I think two things need to happen. Campbell and Manning need to realize - that unless the team suddenly gets healthy , stays healthy and takes a huge leap forward - that we don't have the personnel to play the way they want. And we're going to have to dig a little deeper into the bag of tricks.

Its young in terms of playing football - now he is getting to the point where the idea that its his first year starting is no longer valid.

As the saying goes at some point if you're going to be good you need freshman to stop playing like freshman. He's halfway thru a season after Saturday - he needs to not show mastery because that would be unrealistic - but growth and development IE quicker decisions. Most of his late throws have resulted in picks and or sacks. At this point, he should have seen most coverages in a game or two. So hopefully the processing starts to speed up a little - not rushed but just allows for quicker and more decisive decisions.

Honestly I' personally can live with bad decisions more than indecisive ones. And what I mean by indecisive is when a QB holds onto a ball and than at the end tries to force it in somewhere and takes a coverage sack. When throws late across the field or into double coverage IMO it means he didn't trust something or someone so he went back to where he shouldn't have and tried to force it or hold onto it. He's got to just let it rip and get the ball out quicker and realize that to steal a horrible phrase, its ride or die. You hesitate as a QB you get three bad outcomes

1) Hit or sacked
2) Interceptions
3) Or you lead a receiver to his death by leading him right into a defender

I think pretty much everyone just needs to be a little better at their own assignments. I don't think you can point to one or two guys and say that they're the reason the offense is struggling. Dekkers, for example, needs more time to throw it, and needs receivers to find ways to get open, and backs that present a threat the defense has to respect. For his own part, he needs to feel the pressure better and learn when to escape to extend the play and when to run it and get what he can.

I don't think any of these things are insurmountable.
