The Drive

ISU under Campbell has consistently made more (and dumber) mistakes against Iowa than they do in Big 12 play. Iowa has played with fire in terms of mistakes against us and gotten lucky. In 2019 we dropped at least 3 gift wrapped Nate Stanley picks.

I think it bodes extremely well that we racked up that many yards against what's probably the best defense we will play.

I hope that's the best defense we play, but I doubt it. They are thin depth-wise and lacking speed outside of a couple guys. Their DL didn't get much pressure on Dekkers and got pushed around by our OL. Getting Jacobs back will help them, but if their offense doesn't improve big time, they are going to get worn down. If that's the case, teams like Minnesota, Wisconsin and Nebraska are going to drive them up and down the field.

We moved the ball fairly well and had 2 turnovers in the endzone. We even put one of those in and it’s 17-7. That still the blocked punts And one turnover. They have a good defense, but I don’t don’t think is as elite as they think.

I think they’ll wear out over the season because of their offense, but we played them in Week 2. Our OL did push them around - that’s a HUGE credit to our OL.

Our offense is going to keep us in every game this year.

I think that we need to see a couple more receiving threats step up for us to say that our offense is going to keep us in every game. If I were a DC, I'd say stack the line against Brock and bracket Hutchinson. Can we beat a defense like that? I don't know, because we've not seen much from the other WRs or TEs that they can get open in one on one coverage. I'd honestly consider moving Noel outside and starting Bitter in the slot.

They do what you say and that would feed into Noel showing us what he can do. You throw six on the line and double X and that leaves one on one for the rest. Go 5 wide and they would have to peel someone off the line or go one on one with X. This Ohio game will be good for us. A nice fix it type game and heal game. A game we should win, but will still have to be serious. May be able to rest one or two guys if dinged up and work out a few kinks that we found in the Iowa game.

Yep. They're going to get a chance to show what they can do, because that's the obvious defensive strategy. Take away Brock and X and see if anyone else can beat you one on one. I really thought that Noel was in for a breakout season after that Clemson game. But for whatever reason, we have not seemed to be able to get him the ball in the right spots.

Our WR blocking has been poor is one part.

Not sure if this is the right thread for it, but I would really like to see more out of Noel. He's gotten a ton of hype but until he runs away from someone or breaks a tackle, I don't view him as a major threat out of the slot. Seems like he always goes down on first contact

There were some nice blocks at the 2nd level as well. I'm not that impressed with Iowa's defensive line other than Van Ness who is gonna be another one of those Nordic monsters they put in the NFL. Iowa definitely has a knack for spotting and developing those kind of diamonds in the rough. Jack Campbell will be playing on Sundays as well.

Wouldn't Van Ness be Dutch and not nordic?

I understand the drive was awesome, but what gets skipped over is that there was a 1 yard line defensive stop as a prerequisite that gave birth to "the drive."

If anyone wants to listen to "The Drive" from Iowa's perspective, here it is.

This is solid gold. Anytime I listen to Dolph I always wonder how anyone makes it out of Kinnick alive. Somebody gets killed on every play...

News out of Sioux Falls covering Dekkers

During those 12 long minutes, hok fans had to be watching and wondering 'what if'.
With Dekkers converting 3rd down after 3rd down, what if one of the state's top QB recruits ever, decided to go Iowa instead of ISU.
CMC winning that recruiting battle was a big turning point in determining the success of both programs.

I don't think so. I've stated more than once it was the play of the game. There's a thread dedicated to TJ Tampa's performance so far this year.

And our strength coach Andrews who's now had a few seasons to sculpt these players. Also, great nutrition program!

I would be scared if I was an Iowa fan for the future. Their offense sucks and won't get much better next year. On Saturday they started 9 seniors and they are thin there. What type of team will they have next year??
