Yeah.

Nebraska belongs with Army, Minnesota and Harvard in terms of teams that had a period of dominance but that might as well be a different universe now.

Minnesota has a greater chance of becoming a top 3 program again than Nebraska does, and they have almost no chance.

Princeton is still the all-time leader in national titles claimed with 28. Yale is second with 27.

Alabama is third with 23. Assuming the next guy (Dabo?) can replicate what Saban has done (six so far) they could conceivably pass Princeton in some of our lifetimes.

It has been 25 years since Nebraska won their last national title.

As a comparison, when they were in their early 80s peak it had been about 35 years since Army was a power. I don't know what it was like at the time, but I bet for those that are old enough to remember the early 80s, I'm guessing the idea of Army as a national power seemed like ancient history.

Let's keep in mind outside of the state of Nebraska, Iowa is far and away the place where Nebraska football is most relevant. Proximity, two schools that share(d) a conference with Nebraska, and a very college football-centric state. Nebraska football is ancient and irrelevant in most of the country.

It has been 34 years since Notre Dame won their last title. It's been 25 years since Michigan has won a title and that was a gift because Nebraska would have killed them. Since Nebraska won their last title Ohio State has the only 2 titles for the Big 10. In the last 16 years the SEC has 13 titles. Times have changed since Nebraska dominated and unless you're in the SEC the chances are very slim you will be good enough to win a title in the future. Maybe USC or Ohio State have a magical year, but they are probably the only teams outside of the SEC capable.

That doesn't mean Nebraska can't be a very good team with double digit wins. They currently have more money than any of the teams residing in states next to them and that's while having the worst football they've had in a generation. The right coach will get them winning again and money will pour in and they can take advantage of that money through the NIL and transfers. Other teams around them just don't have the capability of bringing in that kind of cash and the way things are currently set up, cash is going to make a difference. The big question is, will the fans be satisfied with being very good but not having a realistic chance of a NC and will Nebraska be capable of making the right hire?

Ken Miller on KXNO said multiple times today Nebraska should go after Matt Ruhle. He will probably be fired from Carolina soon, and he did a great job at Temple and Baylor. Makes a lot of sense actually.

Matt Ruhle is an elite college football coach. This may be a Saban type of move, failing at the NFL and come back to make a college football program with Warrens buffet money elite again.

Nebraska chose to cut itself off from that talent and OU/Texas/A&M chose to share it with SEC instead of keeping it more to themselves.

I just thought it was interesting to see how much the sport has changed since the late 1800s.

Back then, national titles were won by the (white) sons of New England and Northeast gentry who were attending Ivy League schools. I would also imagine the ambitions for their lives after graduation were joining the leadership caste of academia, business, finance, or politics in Boston, New York, Philly, or DC.

Now national titles are almost entirely won by teams from the Southeast mostly made up of young black man. And the ambition of those young men is to make a pile of money and win glory in the NFL.

Much has obviously changed.

The problem is, will they have the patience to get there. Will they allow a coach the time to rebuild. Will they be satisfied with 6-7 win seasons for several years before they get to 9-10 win seasons. Then when they get to a 10 win season, will that be good enough. Will they fire the guy because its not an undefeated season, a championship? Will they fire the guy when he doesnt win 10+ wins the first time he is expected to have a great year and only wins 7. Will they Fire the guy the first year they have to rebuild a bit after having a good year.

See most places now days outside the select few realize you have the great seasons of 9-10+ wins once in a while, and the 6-8 win seasons regularly and are happy, as long as you dont regress to the 2-3 win seasons. A place like Neb expects 10+ wins every year, with 12+ and Nattys once in a while. The thought of anything less and you are looking at getting fired.

That is the problem, they are so far removed from that level, they are so far outside that group, that they need to be willing to accept building first. Which if you look at all the comments none are. They see CMC as not good enough because 7-8 wins are just not good enough, regardless of the situation. They will never accept that and that is what will continue to make them a dumpster fire, where they fire coaches every few years.

This is pretty funny. Yes, I can see many an AD hanging up the phone and challenging themselves to be the best version of themselves. Thinking they got their man only to find out that they need to be multiple and find other candidates, in case they really don’t love the process.

Crazy how Nebraska is suddenly a regular team without having baked in advantage. It's like college football woke up and discovered a team in Nebraska had a competitive advantage.
