Williams & Blum Pod: Final W/L predictions for the upcoming season

On the oline conversation, i feel like a large part of the Olines reputation issues come from the constant pentalites in big situations, like the false starts on 3rd and short or holding erasing 20+ yards plays when we're struggling to move the ball previously in the game.

As talked about last night in premium I'd love to see a break down on how often that happens. It felt very, very constant

The guessing game of what's going to happen on 3rd or 4th and short also highlights the negative. Blum pointed out that 3rd down conversions weren't good last season.

As I listened to the discussion about the online and references to raw data I thought of the falacy of that data without context. What was their performance like in key situations such as third down? Third and short?

#91 in 3rd down conversion.

Not sure where lists for something like 3rd and short would be found.

#70 in 3rd down defense %.

#68 (kinda weird rankings) for turnovers gained.

I know that turnovers require some luck luck but ISU imo wasn't disruptive enough on defense last year. Great in yards allowed etc. but they really didn't get teams scrambling.

@ChrisMWilliams I am not buying into your hype for Baylor this year. Everyone always mentions the returning talent along the lines, rightfully so, but what’s the argument for replacing all of their skill positions talent? They lose their top 3 rushers, which includes Bohannon, top 2 receivers, best linebacker, and the big 12 D-poty. Baylor’s secondary wasn’t super good last year so losing 2 key starters will hurt. Shapen was good when he was in last year but I believe he suffered a bit from back-up syndrome aka teams don’t have film on the guy, think Purdy against Okie State. Same could be said for the offensive coordinator, first 60% of year they were running all over people and scoring at a good clip. From November on, their offense struggled quite a bit as they failed to score more the 30 points from that point on (against some sub-50 scoring defenses too). I think that is because teams started to figure out their OC’s play calling tendencies. Now this year they will probably throw the ball more but that will lead to more sacks too. Shapen had 7 sacks in 5 games compared to Gerry’s 9 in 12 games. That just tells me Baylor’s oline was great in the run game but was average when they were more pass first.

I really like Aranda, but people seem to be jumping on the hype train a little too quick imo. This is only his 3rd head coaching season, so he has to prove last year wasn’t a flash in the pan.

Baylor has recruited and plugged in transfers well.

They should be a contender.

Better than the defensive game plan so frequently last year --

"Just commit a penalty on third-and-long. It'll work out great."

I almost fell on my own sword at the WVU game that happened so often.

I feel like we struggled on 3rd down both offensively and defensively last year. I think Sage Rosenfels called third down "money down" because it was so critical. Hopefully having a guy like Anthony Johnson on the back end will help us on the defensive side.

But that blanket statement doesn’t really address the lack of returning production at the skill positions. Baylor has taken some transfers on defense but very few on offense the last two years. Like Iowa State they aren’t super active in the transfer portal. All I am saying is there are major question marks with Baylor that aren’t mentioned.

The Oline is average. They don't get a great push (poor 3rd/4th and short execution) they pass blocked ok (Yes Purdy needed to get rid of the ball on time to help with that) and they made mental errors in huge situations.

That would be “was”. We don’t know what “is” will be yet.

For how good the defense is and has been I have 0 clue why 3rd and longs are such an issue for them. Thats been an issue as long running as the offensive shitting their pants after crossing the 45 or so
