Happy Joe's overseas

The second HJ was located on a property owned by my dad and his 2 partners veterinary practice in Muskieville.

Joe Whitty was involved with the Shakey's in Davenprt. Thought he had a better idea. In 1973 I had my first canadian bacon/pineapple at a private opening. Fun.

Less than that, maybe 3 1/2 months. The "Owner" didn't know what a P&L was when I was speaking to him about some cross promotional opportunities. They ended up in an old bank off of 6. Doomed to fail from the start.

The wife bought me a 200 dollar gift card for Xmas as a joke. I bought 5 pizzas 3 months ago from the urbandale loacation and picked up. Was better than most Pickup/Delivery locations I've experienced. Vastly superior to the Corallville location. Always pick up 2/3 pies after Iowa Games on the way back to Central Iowa. Urbandale>Coralville.

I don't find myself overly nostalgic about growing up in the Quad Cities usually, but man, I do miss me some Happy Joes (Canadian bacon/Kraut forever), Rudy's and Hungry Hobo.

With a couple cocktails in the system I think I'd do some terrible things to get my hands on a couple of those microwaved, heart attack inducing beef enchiladas from Rudy's right now.

The other ones I've heard mentioned but please expand on the hungry hobo is it a local cafe?

Cafe is a fun way to categorize the Hobo. It's a QC local chain sub sandwich spot that also has a weirdly large baked potato menu.

I wouldn't call Hungry Hobo the nicest place to visit, the last time I was at one was on Locust in Davenport and they had a bucket in the middle of the restaurant catching water off a busted pipe in the ceiling, but damn, they still make the best subs out there. You can't beat a King 3 with onions and peppers.

Is the one behind Kennedy Mall in DBQ still open? That place was an absolute time portal to 1979 last time I was there, maybe 10 years ago.

Used to be a Hungry Hobo off of First in Coralville. Would stop in there for a sammich once in a while.

Oh man. That sounds really good. Might have to make the trip up from Madison and check it out. Baraboo is a great little town..and the state park there is beautiful.
 
Best was the happy Joes at Southridge mall. As a kid you could watch them make the pizza. I have no idea why that was cool and fun, it just was.

Also the Canadian Bacon with Kraut was pretty good pizza.

We came across a HJ in Maquoketa last weekend and had to stop. I hadn’t been to a Happy Joe’s in years. Wife’s first time and she’s a fan now.

Man, I didn't realize they closed the Blairs Ferry location and the one west of downtown. I used to deliver for all three of those.
 
Man, didn't realize how much of a commodity Happy Joes was. There are 2 here in Dubuque, and another one right across the river in East Dubuque. It's good pizza, but a little overpriced for what it is, IMO. I didn't grow up with it in North Iowa, so maybe it's a nostalgia thing? My wife grew up in Clinton (still one there, too) and her family grew up on it and swear by the taco especially. I prefer Casey's Taco, but maybe it's just me.

Southridge was so great back in the day. The Ottumwa location use to let you watch them make the pizzas as well. You're right it was fun to watch.
