Ideal conference size

Personally, I think 10 is boring. Same 9 teams every year and no other P5 teams ever if you have a rival like Iowa-ISU.

I'd love to go back to 8 team conferences or divisions like the days of the Big 8. 7 teams you play every year plus room for a couple novel games every year, either opposite side of the conference or even better would be the flexibility to get a Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, or Illinois on the schedule. But that's a pipe dream.

I feel like we got no credit anyway in the many years our teams SOS were generally #1 in nation. About half of the time our schedules were as tough as even SEC and almost always tougher than big ten. (Talking fb)

In basketball our schedules have been on another planet compared to other leagues and still will be in new version.

None of that got us anywhere as a conference. The media ignored it or outright lied about it or were so stupid they couldn’t understand we had 4 or 5 less teams so we didn’t need the most bowl teams or most ncaa teams to be deepest conference.

I think growing our # past ten can only help fight that willful ignorance.

Maybe. Things are pretty well set in stone for perception.

Lots of Bucky fans still think the B1G's defense in basketball was top notch last year when it objectively wasn't.

I don’t know if we’d have won the b10 last year, but looking at our non conf especially vs b10 including hostile road game I think ISU would’ve been 3rd at the very worst.

ACC was top heavy but had some legit class. The big 12 was radically better than everybody else last year. KU or Baylor or Texas Tech would’ve carved up the Big Ten. I’d give TCU a 50/50 shot of winning it. That league just isn’t that great right now. UCLA is going to give them a much needed boost and possibly be the flagship team (obviously it is historically but talking just 2024).

Or two ten team conferences that share media rights and title game/tournaments?

I don’t think b10 and sec are heading toward that but Pac/b12 merger could be?
BigPac. Or maybe 12PAC. Big12Pac? I like it.

Four 16-team power conferences can create a 16-team FB playoff in the following way.
*Each conference has two divisions and a round robin format is used within the divisions (7 games each)
*Then the teams finishing 1st in one division play the teams finishing 2nd in the other. 3rd vs 4th, 5th vs 6th etc... This gives every team an 8th conference game and eliminates the need to give a damn about unbalanced divisions. If there is more concern about changing balance, have rotating pods of 4 with each foursome preserving rivals.
*The 1 vs 2 round is the de facto round of 16 nationally. the winners of the 1vs2 games play each other for the conference title in the round of 8.
*The conference winners then advance to play the other conference winners. The losers of the conference championship games (round of 8) go to "New Years 6" bowls.

The teams not in those 64 (D1-alpha) have a separate division (D1-bravo) and can model the season the same way. Their four winners advance to "New years 6" bowls to play out their level of the CFB playoff

To get to 18 conference basketball games, play double round robin within your pod of four (6 games) and the other twelve teams once.

The ideal size was 10, and we'll probably never see it again after this year.

Round robin football schedule, double round robin basketball schedule.

I think I said this in the other thread. If I was king for a day, I'd make eight 10 team leagues based on region and rivalry, and have the 8 champs in a CFP. You're welcome.

I don't mind that at all, but I believe it's workable up to 14 teams. Play everyone in your division every year and half the other division every year on a rotating basis. More than 14 and you're an association or a league.

Really liked 12 Team Conference (like the original Big12)-2 Divisions
5 Against your Division
3 Alternating three of the other Division
1 FCS/Cupcake
1 Rival Game (Iowa)
1 Other Power 5 Game (Minnesota would be a fun roadtrip, Illinios?, Mizzou, etc)
1 Random Game- You could use to find a game near a beach (any of the florida schools), or a game near your coach's stomping grounds (ohio), or near your stud Recruits home (Arizona, etc)

10 was the perfect size, especially if every conference did it that way. Now 16 is the number you want.

18, 20, and 24 would likely be the next numbers.

How do you play half of 7 teams every year? :)

I would agree 12 is acceptable too though, old Big12 style...
