Pride Month

And FYI, if you've never been to a Pride Parade in a major city, it's something you should do once. For a city like Minneapolis, we have one of the largest Pride Parades in the country where anywhere from 500,000 to 800,000 people line Hennepin Ave downtown. And it is a party. We tailgate like we do at Jack Trice, getting to our spot at 8:00 am and are there all day.
Absolutely agree! I went to the parade in Chicago a couple of times while living there and it was always a blast.

Kind of a funny story, my wife and I decided to take a weekend trip to Palm Springs in early November (2019). Figured it'd be quiet leading up to the holidays. We knew something was up when we got out to the pool early to claim some chairs and they were setting up a stage. A little asking around and we found out they do a Pride week in November there because it's too damn hot in June. We had a blast, but it was decidedly not quiet.

Funny story #2 - I worked for a small business for a summer in high school. The owner was a huuuuge Rush Limbaugh ditto head, social conservative, blah blah blah. Took his wife and the two kids to Disneyland (world?) for a weeklong trip that just so happened to be... Pride Week there. He was still beyond pissed when he got back, I can't imagine what he was like while he was there. Anyway...flash forward a decade or so and he's finished his transition and holding down the T part of LBGTQIA. Good for him on living his life as his authentic self, just kind of cracks me up thinking about how mad he got about it.

Point of the story - go, it's a blast. But if you're going to have a problem with it make sure to check your travel plans.

Oh man. Yeah, some cities don't have their Pride celebration in June. We've been to the Palm Springs Pride a couple of times over the past decade. Good times but yeah...that city is overtaken for sure!

And wow regarding your former employer! Glad they found their happiness regardless of their age.

100% Agree.

A friend of mine was working at a downtown hotel 20 years ago in Minneapolis (when I was in undergrad) and my girlfriend (now wife) and I drove over to visit him.
Growing up in a small town in NW WI, it was quite the observational experience to walk through the park where Pride was happening. At the time I knew one person who was gay (I actually knew a lot more, but they weren't out yet).

I've marched in the parade in Iowa City with the choir that my wife sings in (https://thequire.org/) and I hope I can do it again this year.

I was surprised at those comments. Seems those folks have forgotten a simple public rule. If you can't say anything nice don't say anything at all.
Unfortunately the cruelty of people no longer surprises me

My internship in 2013 was in Minneapolis and my apartment looked over Loring Park which is where the parade ends/where the non parade activities are.

I remember it very vividly talking with my roommate one morning as there was all this stuff getting setup but there wasn’t any signage yet. “Looks like it’ll be a fun little festival this weekend”.

Wake up Saturday morning and it’s utter chaos with thousands and thousands of people in the park.

Oh how naïve we were. But it was a fun time! I’ll have to find pictures.

Chicago's parade is very fun I've ended up at it once completely on accident and another time planned

For the record, it's a running joke on how corporations/brands use Pride Month to make and sell Pride-themed goods, and announce everywhere they can how supportive they are...then July 1 hits and it's silence the rest of the year. Some companies truly are great at supporting the community...others are cringey. And while some of what brands are doing is just so they aren't caught in the crosshairs of NOT showing support, most are genuine.

But there is also something called knowing your audience. Some brands and their publicity/posts during Pride are so cringey.

The US Marine Corp posted a tweet yesterday, which I find amazing and am glad they posting something. It's great to see the military do this. But their post was somehow able to piss off both the LGBTQIA+ community AND homophobes at the same time. That is impressive. Why rainbow BULLETS? Why not a rainbow camo helmet? Again, glad they did something but they should have consulted with some gays before post hahah.

Another was the city of Toronto. Nothing says 'you're an integral part of our city!' like trash. (Image attached)

Budweiser and Queens, NY had what they thought was a good ad...but it really comes off badly (see attached)

This.

Some of the most fun events I have been to revolved around Pride. When I lived in Omaha our company was big into Pride events and the parade, so I was involved a lot. Also been to pride in the Twin Cities and Chicago, both were amazing.

However when I was in Australia, we went to the Pride Parade in Melbourne, and by god that is quite the experience. It's the largest in the world and it gets a little weird, but a ******* blast.

That Bud Light ad seems fine to my ignorant ass? Besides the whole corporations all caring about LGBT for one month only undertones

It's probably wrong but I will admit the Bud light one made me laugh. (hangs head)
